Or Duck Tape, because they are too cheap to buy Duct Tape.
Suspiciously stereotypical thinking.
I'm doing an informal "gofundme" for a single mom friend who has cancer (fuck cancer) and I'm trying to figure out the best way to gift the money to her (she's not local so this will have to get sent in some fashion).
Visa gift card? Multiple or just a single card (we'll probably end up with around $1500)? A physical card or virtual? Some other option?
I want to make things as easy as possible for her and don't want to make it complicated for her to use the money or restrict where she could use it (which is why we decided to just give her money and not a spa day or maid service or store-specific gift card). I'm just trying to make sure I have all the considerations in place.
(yes, just venmo-ing her the money might be easiest but is less "gift-y" so would like to avoid that choice unless everything else is a bad idea)

Why not send a cashier’s check? Feels pretty old school, but that lets her put it in whatever medium she wants. Depends on what you want to do, maybe. The cashier’s check is just straight utilitarian and lets her get the money anywhere she might need it through her financial institution, while a Visa gift card is weighted toward new purchases.
If you want her to buy food and essentials and maybe something nice for herself the Visa gift card might accomplish that a little bit better. If she needs some cushion in her checking account the cashier’s check will be more effective.

Thanks. I think for the moment she's doing ok financially, so doesn't need an immediate cushion (we're not doing the collection because she currently needs money, more doing it because we love her and we hate what's happening and want to show her some support in a way that feels both meaningful and meaningless, if that makes any sense). So while a cashier's check would effectively do the same thing and like you said could simply pump up savings, she surely buys enough stuff that a visa gift card would get put to use. But I am concerned about that large of a gift card, will it be an annoyance or not.
I'm still collecting money so not having to decide today or anything, but just trying to think through all the possibilities.

Gigolos 'n blow?
I won a pretty good sized gift card from a work thing one time, and it was sorta neat to have some “mad money” hanging out in my wallet. I forgot about it more often than I remembered it was there.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cool thing you’re doing, and best wishes to her.

I find store specific gift cards annoying but the Visa one is OK - you can add it to an Apple Pay or Google Pay account and automatically use it the next time you buy stuff (without having to worry about what the balance on the card is). Or add it to your Amazon/Paypal/Venmo account for online purchases.
Depending on how much money there could be some tax implications to you and/or your friend. Venmo/PayPal have reporting requirements for the IRS now
Personal transactions and gifts - which this is - aren’t taxable. Don’t mark it as purchasing goods and services and she won’t get a 1099-K. And even if she did, it’s still not a taxable event, just more noise tossed around.

Personal gifts can have tax consequences (sufficiently high amounts will be deducted from the giver's $12M lifetime estate tax limit) but there's an annual exemption of $17K per recipient in 2023. So $1500 or so is fine and there's no need to report anything to the IRS.
Duno about down thar but I can send 3000$ a day thru the Canadian banking system to anybody with an E-mail and a Canadian bank account,

Gift card or Venmo/Zelle are good. Gift cards might have transaction fees (on purchase) and/or inactivity/maintenance fees after time.
Because rich has nothing to do with money.
What do "spic" and "span" mean and why do they mean clean when used together?
Well then my followup question is why are we still using an olde English term if nobody knows what the words mean?
