It struck me that New Jersey is the only U.S. state beginning with "New" where that word is often dropped (i.e. the state is often referred to as just "Jersey"). No one says just York, Mexico, or Hampshire that I'm aware of. Just sort of odd.

Might be as simple as "New Jersey girl" not having the same ring to it as "Jersey girl."
