I could probably get a bit more light with new halogens, but according to Internet forums (there are actually Honda CR-V forums) the stock headlights are notoriously bad, and newer halogen bulbs are only a small improvement.

The lenses are not too terribly cloudy, I checked that. Going down the forum rabbit hole tells me that the headlights I have are reflector style, which sees more improvement from LED upgrade. If you have a car with projector style headlights, you should do an HID upgrade.

So I bought some LED upgrades for a couple hundred. Good reviews, supposed to be aim-able with good cutoff to not glare out oncoming drivers, and a substantial increase in visibility. This seems like an area where cheaping out isn’t worthwhile.

The back half of my yard has been turned into a soccer pitch, getting so serious with the 10 year olds that I almost just called it football.

I've had 2-4 kids on it most days all fall and through the winter excepting the couple weeks we actually had snow.

It used to have great grass. Now it looks like this:

The most important thing to us is that the kids are outdoors moving around, but I'd like to do what I can to revive it this spring/summer.

Keeping them off of it for a period of time any longer than a week is off the table. We'd rather have them out running than have nice grass this year.

In the next week or so after raking all the dead stuff off I plan to rent an aerator and then overseed and water in the early mornings / late evenings when it makes sense.

Is there anything else I am missing? How do I revive the lawn without restricting use?

FWIW, there is already a no cleats policy and I do my best to keep them off of it when it's muddy.

Having two Great Dane boys, I feel your pain. Your plan is what I’ve been doing and I’m always one step behind with the repairs. Maybe I’ll finally have a nice lawn when they are no longer around. Not that I really need one in a high desert climate though.

Any new grass growth will be stomped back into the dirt unless they stay off for a long time. Just have synthetic lawn installed.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Lol, I know. I don't expect too much to grow but it's worth a shot?

Wonder if something like straw over it for a few weeks would make a difference if there is still traffic on it?

I just don't see what part of you thinks that is remotely possible.

Well there is (was) grass there, so I'm hopeful some of that comes back.. but yeah I know its likely an exercise in futility.

Still gotta try. It's for the kids man!

Just scatter some grass seed around and go have a cocktail in the shade. But water it in the evening as often and as much as you can. In a couple years you can spend time and money fixing it but it's a waste now.

I guess when I think about it the real question would be is it worth it to rent a machine and aerate it.. was thinking that might give the new grass a better shot at establishing roots and the old stuff better chances of coming back.

    Never gone that route before.

    Thoughts?

Until you can keep people off the lawn for new grass (an entire season) or sod (a month or two then no heavy traffic for a season) there is no point in doing anything your lawn.

JPH, my MIL's yard is pretty bare from her two huge, hyperactive dogs. As mentioned, new grass doesn't stand much of a chance. The other problem is that the regular watering needed to grow new grass just keeps the dirt soft and wet and more susceptible to damage. At this point, we're basically managing the mud with mulch on the highest traffic/most bare areas.

Unrelated random question, what's up with Stio? All the sudden their catalogs started arriving. Some nice looking stuff, and it's expensive so it's gotta be good, right?
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

I picked up some ski pants from them this year and really like them after popping into their Park city location. They are replacing my 15+ year old marmot ski pants so I’ll get back to you in a little over a decade on how these hold up compared to those

Started by one of the founders of Cloudveil. IME, quality is really good, but fit is hit or miss. Features are a little hit/miss as well, but less so. Colors IRL aren't always as depicted in the catalog/online.

The original Snotel jacket from the mid-teens is still my go-to for spring lifts + short excursions beyond the ropes.

It's Cloudveil, right? Like the owners of Cloudveil started Stio, I think?
