    Bizarro world indeed.
Big doctor shortage down here. My primary care left the state for Florida (WTF?) and of those left to choose from the wait time to see them was a year. I now have a nurse practitioner as my primary care and I love her.

I've had the same ACL surgery in Canada and CA which makes for a good comparison.

In Canada I had to get a referral from a GP to see a surgeon. Earliest appt was a year out since the surgeon turned out to be the Canucks team doc who was in high demand. Once I saw him I had my choice of surgery dates as early as the following week. Total out of pocket cost was $25 for crutches and an $8 copay for percocet. Never saw bills for anything else. Insurance covered around 10 physical therapy appts then I would have had to pay out of pocket for more. This was 2004 so I'm sure wait times are worse now.

When I tore it here (2018), I picked a surgeon who some friends had used. Just had to be in network. Turned out to be former doc for Chargers and LA Kings. I was able to get an appt within 10 days of calling which I did once swelling went down. Had to get an MRI for insurance to approve surgery, then I could pick a date as early as a month out. Tore ACL in March, had surgery start of May. Had decent insurance with $2k deductible and then 20% after that up to $4k out of pocket, which was quickly reached. I got copies of every bill. The total was around $60k. Insurance paid around $12k. I spent many hours dealing with billing errors between insurance and providers that added to out of pocket. Health insurance was supposed to cover physical therapy as long as prescribed by doctor but insurance cut that off after a month because I wasn't reporting "pain" anymore on the survey I filled out each visit. Uhhh.... surgery was a month ago, physio is about recovering strength and range of motion not reducing pain.

I live in city with tons of providers so wait times aren't really an issue. I'm sure it is an issue in many areas. In BC my mom had to wait two years for first knee replacement surgery. Shorter wait for knee #2. They have lost a lot of doctors in their area so depending what you need, the wait can depend on whether any doctors/specialists are there locally.

I helped coordinate a trauma patient return to NewZealand after a bike crash that resulted in broken femur, collarbone, several ribs, some cracked vertebrae.
Life Flight jet from VA to CA. Then business class tix for her and nurse who could assist her for the 13hr leg to NZ. Then one more flight before a helicopter trip to the NZ rehab hospital. Imagine that’s your spouse and all you want to do is get her home. You’ll burn through cash like it’s nothing.
Another buddy’s brother crashed road biking in Italy last year. Waited in a rural hospital for 2 weeks with a broken pelvis before he got transferred to Milan for surgery. A week later, buddy had to front him $15,000 before they would transfer him to a rehab hospital. Turns out inpatient rehab wasn’t part of their socialized medicine.

“socialized medicine” is generally for tax paying citizens of that country yeah? Hence why there is confusion when health care isn’t free for Americans visiting Canada

This. Blows my mind that anyone would expect free healthcare in a country they don't pay taxes in, especially Americans who run their fucking clapper about communist hellholes and their insane tax rates then expect to be cared for at no cost when they fuck themselves up abroad.

A few years ago my dad cracked his pelvis crashing a MTB here in the US. Had to go to the ER, paid some $3k out of pocket for a few tests, just enough to justify medical repatriation. He was flown back home 1st class for free and his French insurance eventually covered the US bill. He also had travel insurance which kicked in and covered the bill in the interim while I was fighting the hospital over here to get them to work with the insurance company.

In-patient rehab is covered pretty much everywhere in Europe for people who are actually from there. No reason this courtesy should be extended to anyone else. What happened to pulling oneself by one's fucking bootstraps? Not applicable abroad? Fucking leeches...

Healthcare is a right. Food is a right (gubmint cheese and other leftovers) but not free money for whatever.

Housing is more complicated. If you can work fuck you. No free housing. If you’re disabled then do what your body allows to pay for your grift.

Supply chain issues have created a severe Bootstrap shortage.

The quote it spat out for me was $259 for a whole year, seems like a relative bargain, does that price carry through to checkout?

259 for the coverages listed seems pretty cheap, especially once you consider medical risks

As detailed elsewhere on these pages, I dropped some heavy shit on my foot on Tuesday, with my big toe getting the worst of it. Now I have a massive frickin blood blister on my toe. I mean, it's hudge. Basically the length of the toe from the nail back, and wide. And thick.

    Pop it?

pics available but I thought I would refrain.

It’s always better to leave it if you can for as long as possible, but that thing is going to pop at some point. So if it’s painful or you need to wear shoes or whatever, it’s probably better to take care of it on your own terms than to explode blood all over the inside of your loafers.

I’m neither a doctor or a dentist, so take that for what it’s worth
