There is a little spike, but the disease burden is pretty low compared to previous waves. Very few on vents in our system, very few in hospital "for" covid. Might be a lot of positive cases, but overall burden remains low.

To Vaccinate or Not---The Rat Flu Odyssey Continues

Just saw a Twitter post and article on mathematical analysis that omicron part 2 (BA.2) is gonna be big, large vax and natural immunity breakthrough, reinfections from BA.1, etc. sounds like fun. Can’t wait: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2202.05031.pdf

Except for the fact the the virus has a chance to mutate.

Maybe it's ok that people don't vaccinate.

They are the ones that are brainwashed to question science. So they will die at a higher rate, so overall it's a net gain for society.

But again, except that the virus will have a better chance to mutate.

We all got to see clear as day that CDC direction wasn't just "following the science" in the case when everybody had Omicron (Vax'd or not) in December 2021/January2022 and the CDC conveniently changed the isolation period from 10 down to 5 days to help employers get everybody back to work and not grind society to a halt. That wasn't following the science, but rather considering a more important factor at the moment which was trying to keep the thin veil of organized society moving, and not devolve into a Mad Max esque dystopia...science and pandemic be damned.

Public policy is dictated by more than one factor, and always has. Leaders don't like to admit this though. The "Will of the people" will always be the strongest motivator to politicians who prefer to be re elected and not tarred and feathered. Thats why the first states to lift their mask mandates were all :GASP: Democratic strongholds.

In related news...Aspen Skiing Company just announced they are dropping their vaccine mandate for both employees and indoor dining in their properties.

The FAQ's below the announcement dealt with surprisingly one topic: How to reaccept the myriad of employees that resigned in the past year for not forcing an experimental gene therapy treatment into their bodies. What a quick about face!

Myriad of employees huh? You have some numbers to prove that?
Experimental gene therapy treatment? You have some solid science to back up that claim?

Re hospital capacity beta. Friday night son at college in Norman, OK says he's feeling sick with a fever.. Chatting watching Big 12 tournament. He took a COVID test and it was negative.. Said he'll go to urgent care for a flu test if still sick Saturday. Yester fever gone, feeling fine. Today he texts from Urgent Care saying severe abdominal pain. They say maybe kidney stones, I was thinking appendicitis.

Ambulance ride to real hospital ER where he is now. No waiting, admitted to a room immediately.

THANK YOU FOR GETTING VACCINATED! EVERYONE! Even Oklahoma seems to have things under control now. Hope it stays that way.

Still waiting to hear what the official diagnosis is.. But glad he made it there and is getting proper care.

Update.. Kidney stone conformed.. Calculus that math lab can't help him with OUCH!
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Our mask mandate ended at midnight Friday in Washington state. I was out grocery shopping today at Costco and Fred Meyer and I'd estimate a good 75% of shoppers were still wearing masks. I'm sure this percentage will start dropping off in time, but for now most people are still choosing to mask. It's interesting how much this varies depending on where you live.

Enumclaw Safeway last Sunday. Even the staff weren't wearing masks.

I figured you wouldn't have to venture too far outside Seattle for this to be the case.

There are two reasons to wear a mask--to protect yourself and to control the spread of the virus. With the availability of N95 masks and vaccination one can get good protection for oneself without the need for the other person to wear a mask or be vaccinated--although obviously the protection is greater if everyone else is vaccinated and wearing a mask. As far as the spread of the virus, as long as hospitalizations and deaths, and maybe percentage of positive tests, keep going down making mask wearing a personal decision seems reasonable. At the first sign of another surge then people need to be urged to put the masks back on.

That doesn't mean the pandemic is over. We need to keep testing for variants, keep an eye on sewage, expand the supply of covid drugs and Evushield, keep working on nasal vaccines to more directly block the spread of this virus(for this pandemic and to perfect the technology for the next one), continue to stockpile PPE. improve funding for public health, and develop a national pandemic strategy that doesn't depend so heavily on thousands of county health departments.

    Agreed.
That said it’s exponentially more difficult to get others to do so each new round.

Pfizers CEO said today they are working on a vaccine that will cover all corona viruses down the road, so he said expect to get one more jab down the road.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

What is the “first sign?” I think most would say wastewater testing. But how many areas are actually doing that. And how many people will be willing to change their behaviors when it’s wastewater data versus hospitalizations or deaths?

Doesn't the CDC already have guidelines for when masking should be no longer required? Just use the same guidance in reverse for when masking should be required.
