The f1.8 should help keep the stars from looking like apostrophes too.

    But this is more fun!

Was it Al's blog? Honestly, whoever said that either has zero spacial awareness or has never skied A basin. It's funny when you're wrong, but a little sad when it's someone who should know better.

Anyway, sorry for the thread drift.

Also how did they get the comet's tail to bend the opposite direction that it does in everyone else's photos?

An f1.8 will produce some really nice shots. Thinking of playing around with my point and shoot Canon with an f2.8 at 28mm to see how that turns out.

Now that you say that, it may be a sunrise shot. The east wall is still out of frame behind and to the right, but it appears to be over grizzly, which would be NE

That should be a good combo. Lock in your infinity focus before you're out in the dark.

I'm not entirely convinced Benny's Stonhenge pic isn't a fake. Some guy just put some paving stones together on a hill, laid down and took that.

I got out last night. Stupid clouds have been a pain.

Got a few cool photos with some foreground elements only to find out after the fact that there were powerlines that I couldn't see in the dark when composing the shots. I guess I'll have to see how good the powerline removal tool in Photoshop really is.

I couldn't have lined up the head of the comet any better with the power line

I chased the comet until nearly 1AM. I went to Lake Willoughby and hiked around to the nude beach section. But the comet remained hidden behind the shoulder of Mt Pisgah. I could have kept hiking around the Lake but I wasn't sure how far I would have to go. So I cut my losses. Took a few shots of the nighttime lake and headed back to the truck.
I decided to head over the hill to a spot I know has a good NNE view. It was pea soup fog up until the last minute when it broke and I could see the sky and the horizon. It was still pretty cloudy and this spot has the town of Newport on the horizon that creates a lot of light pollution. I took a wide angle shot to see if I could pick up any traces of the comet and found that only the tail was visible. Poking out of the city light illuminated fog bank.

I hope there are less clouds tonight. I'm going to try the 50mm 1.8 as well to try to shorten my exposure time.

How much blood did you loose to mosquitos? You can get some really nice Milky Ways up there but I gave up on astrophotography in VT in summer.

I couldn't believe the lack of mosquitoes last night. I think I only got bit twice and I had no bug spray on.

Ya, what's up with that? When I was a kid they would usually dwindle to none in the middle of July. Now I am used to being eaten alive all summer. Except this year I noticed a significant drop off. Is it the relatively dry year so far? And of course they love me, I am a mosquito, and black fly, magnet.

Get them all. You can never have enough bokeh.

I have all but the 12. I'll probably sell the 24.

It was me at some coyotes last night. And several other like minded comet watchers.

Yep, it's pretty faint until the sky is dark. When you can see any other stars look a couple fists up from the horizon in the NW and you'll spot it easily. Much easier to see through binocs.

Here's another shot from last night.
