Was up at Crater Lake, OR over the weekend, saw something over in the NW part of the sky. At first thought it was a satellite, then poof, it was gone. So not sure if I saw it or an alien space craft spying on Earth.

Haven't seen this one yet but now I've got to make an effort to look.

I remember seeing Hale-Bopp in 1997 but I've got to go look for this one now. A comet visible to the naked eye is probably worth being awake at an inconvenient hour.

I remember seeing Hale-bopp too. We drove up to Snoqualmie pass to see it with less light pollution a few times. I also distinctly remember running through the yard as a 6-7 year old and suddenly it clicked that I was going to die before it came back to Earth

I got out to see it this morning, but I was a little late. Intended to leave the house at 3:00, but didn't get out till almost 4:00. It starts getting light really early this time of year, even with daylight saving. I could see the comet well through binoculars, but was almost impossible to see with the naked eye at that time. Hopefully the comet is still visible in about a week when it will be in the northwest sky after sunset. That will be a much more reasonable hour for viewing!

My photo efforts last night were a failure. Here's one where I've outlined the comet. As you can see it's already quite faint and this was at about 4:15 am.

This was 1/6 second at 1600 ISO, f3.5. I think there were a couple problems: 1. the sky was just getting too light by then, and 2. there must have been a slight haze. When the sun came up the Olympics weren't very clear. I'm no expert in astrophotography, though.

That Mt Hood shot is incredible!

Sounds like the best evening viewing will begin this week. Technically the comet will be visible tonight, but it will be very close to the horizon. The best viewing will be between July 14-20 with the comet slowly moving up in the sky and moving from the NNW to the NW. Look in the sky about 80 minutes after sunset.

Nice photo. From the info it looks like he stacked the photos of Hood + comet at various settings to get that.
