Ski Chile 2020, one rider down
5 counties in eastern Santiago are to end quarantine as a block on July 28 and enter the first stage of opening (“phase 2”). Mobility within them is permitted mon-fri, with curfew and weekends shutdown. I doubt Chileans will behave appropriately, and it can be reversed anytime. 12 counties of the Region Metropolitana will continue in quarantine.
No news just yet on access to the mountains in Lo Barnechea, where the ski areas are. Only one road, with check points. No turistas and no second home owners allowed, for now.

My pidulles finally got the better of me and I deviated from my temp permiso route, biking the canal by our place, for this view of El Colorado
And a bit further north, La Parva
Pretty tempting stuff. For now, a bike ride will do

Nice pictures of the snow in the alpenglow, Casey.
Damn it would be a good year to be skiing Chile if it weren't for the virus....

Now that I can post from my computer, here are some more goodies
Many Chileans first experience snow at Parque Farellones, with bunny runs, ziplines, toboggans, chair rides and lots of other ways for brazilians to get hurt...
Cerro Catedral opened the 23rd
I get my kicks drawing lines on volcano webcams pics
Volcan San Jose today
Perhaps? The road, if open, gets to where the yellow line starts, I see two lines on "El Moro" in the foreground

Ski Chile 2020, one rider down
This yahoo was out on el cono before dawn today, and they got back to Stgo without an “incident”, so it is possible after all.
The knot where 3 ski areas and 5 lifts meet
Cono sur
La Parva looking wind blasted as usual, but wysiwyg, where there is snow, there is lots of it

Ski Chile 2020, one rider down
So the “official-official” deal to get to the ski areas is that one has to be from a phase 2 comuna, and be able to prove it. I went up early but still got stuck at the km 11 carabineros control.
A guy with his family tried to convince the cop he complied for 20 minutes, and still got turned back. I got thru in one minute. Lots of bikes and a fair amount of traffic for a week day.
With the ski areas closed (supposedly no entry) and no services whatsoever, plus extremely limited medical attention in the mountain towns, the ban on use of second residences is strictly enforced.
Aside from some duties, I got a quick ski out to Manantiales (out of the ski area) for a run with some friends. The first in 10 months...
It was windier the higher you went, so we stayed low trying to some snow that wasn’t overly weathered.
We could hardly have been more SD’d.

So all that snow that fell in the Central zone at the end of June/early July, was due to
"El bloqueo que habitualmente se produce en los inviernos, cuando se posiciona un sistema de alta presión al norte y otro al sur de la zona central, se localizó muy bien, algo que no ocurría hace mucho tiempo. Eso dejó un corredor por donde pasaron los frentes que cruzaron la zona central”, dice el meteorólogo."
or "The blockage that usually occurs in winters, when a high pressure system is positioned to the north and another to the south of the central zone, was very well located, something that has not occurred for a long time. That left a corridor where the fronts that crossed the central zone passed, ”says the meteorologist."
That is, an "atmospheric river".
That looked like this in early July
And arrived like this
That has not occurred since, and rainfall has been minimal, 10 cm in La Parva in the past 3 weeks. The deficits continue and stand as (going south):

But, there is a decent base, so any snowfall above 30 cm will be heaven.

Chile has some bizarro landscapes, some of which are best appreciated from satellites. Most are formed by volcanism. Such as:
Chajnantor Plateau (where the 66 Alma radio telescopes are at about 5,000m)
Going south, many little known volcanoes abound, most on the border of Bolivia and Argentina
Volcan Tupungatito (5.500m) near Santiago, with its boiling lake
Puyehue and the cordon de Caulle, which erupted in 2011, most of the white is ash
Volcan Chaiten, which erupted in 2007 and nearly buried the nearby town of Chaiten.
Volcan Hudson, near Coyhaique, which erupted in 1991 and 2011.

I have a few friends that work at and with ALMA from my former job. The group I was with had a little receiver telescope on top of Sairecabur.

Time for a volcano tour, dusk was nice the length of the Andes today
V Descabezado and Quizapu
Volcan Nuevo, Nevados de Chillan
V Villarrica
V Osorno
I like to think I will be heading south by months end, if the stars align. Central zone ski areas are likely to continue closed, in particular now that the heat is on and new snow is not forecast. Looking nice in Chillan, with apparently little traffic on the road.
At least I know that the upper basins of the Araucanía are pretty much virus-free. Social isolation is a way of life up there, where the herder/gatherers are slowly being encroached by Santiago escapees getting their mountain retreat. Backcountry heaven.

Ski Chile 2020, one rider down
The lucky ones, quarantined and stuck up in the wilds of Las Raíces ranges, with motos, here on a roll near the Navidad lava flow...
