For sure, anything north of Rt 6 between the river and the Taconics is pretty cool. I don't know if the taxes are any better on that end of the county than my end but most people wouldn't consider it affordable if they weren't already from here.

    And yeah, it's definitively Downstate.
Is the job in Tarrytown or you want to live in Tarrytown?

    The job is in Tarrytown.
In person gig, with international travel requirements, so adding long daily commutes wouldn't be ideal.

I've seen ToP a few times over the past 30 or so years. They are still awesome.

Working the weekend the fest. Dammit! Would have loved to see ToP then Herbie Hancock. Wouldn't be surprised if some of ToP sits in with Hancock. That would be tight.

Then you want to live in Cold Spring. I don't know shit, but that seems like the answer.

What's a reasonable commute? How far from the train station is the office? I think you could be as far as Beacon and still be within 45 minutes or less. Look at the map and think "walkable village" near a train station along the Hudson line because if you can't walk or ride a bike it adds a dimension that you don't want to deal with. There are no bike restrictions on Metro North anymore, they opened it up during covid.

Unless he has a spouse or other willing to pick up and drop off. I know people that did that for a while from CS 10-15 years ago but they had a house sitting gig, and then rented an apartment in Garrison within walking distance of the train platform. One of those brick buildings at the beginning of the strip just after you turn the corner. He eventually had to commute to CT instead of NYC and then they moved back to VT.

Living 30+ miles from the office isn't in our future.
Great advice on the train, that's going into the equation!

I don't know the definition of reasonable commute any more. Here in Vermont, people regularly travel over an hour for shit jobs.

I commuted 2+ hours for a while (it was actually a good job).

Have ridden the Metro North Hudson line many, many times when Mrs MNIAW was seeing oncologists at Sloan-Kettering. We would drive from Saratoga to Poughkeepsie and then not stress out over having to drive into the city. I would think you could live in Poughkeepsie and train it to Tarrytown in about an hour. Make sure you have train beers for the ride home.

Like the others have said, Metro North is a very pleasant way to travel. I believe Tarrytown is one of the bigger stops for the express trains too. If you settled in one of the other Express stops (like Croton for instance) it would speed up the ride even more. If you’re not a train guy, the river towns are close together and more affordable than Scarsdale or the horsey parts of the county. And if you’re willing to risk occasional backups on the Tappan Zee, Rockland County is much cheaper than Westchester

Pay for parking (if available) and a train ticket -------$500/month???? There is a way to pay for commuting w non-taxed $$ similar to an HSA, fwiw. And it's 1/2 hr further to JFK and Newark.

    Any school age kids involved?

We have an 8 and 2 year old.
House + tax prices are already eye opening, so what's another $500 monthly bill for public transit? Oi vey.
I'm sure the train is fine; we just have no interest in making this kind of move and adding a lengthy commute to the mix. We've been spoiled by 0-25 minute commutes, and 35 minute airport runs, for a decade.

Walking a super short distance from your house to the train for your daily commute is awesome.

Sleeping and otherwise living a super short walking distance from a train, blows.

"You get used to it" lol

Yeah the taxes here are a special kind of fucked, especially when you get into Putnam and Dutchess and realize you're probably not even getting town water or sewer unless you're right in a village.

Even Tarrytown proper won't give you 35 min airport access. Everything else we're talking about could give you a 25 min commute. And if you're up by Cold Spring, that opens up Stewart International for some flights. Europe, not so much. And I'm really mostly talking out my ass. There's actual locals on here.

Yeah, Westchester Airport is a quick in/out also and might be 30 minute from Tarrytown at certain times of day but, like Stewart, they probably don’t fly where you want to go. There are no easy airport solutions around here.

All that being said, it’s not a terrible place to live. You just need to work harder at a lot of stuff.

Nonstop to Iceland from Stewart and HPN makes it easy (but too expensive) to go to a lot of places.

I'm tired of trying so hard. I'm ready to leave.

The Official Argue About Where Upstate NY Is Thread

I kind of like that area. Never lived there. My sister lives in Yonkers right on the river 2 blocks from Hastings on the Hudson. I assume if you’re offered a job there the money is going to reflect the location.

I’d also live right there. No commuting. Sleepy Hollow (North Tarrytown) has a cool walkable downtown, so does Tarrytown and Hastings on Hudson

Yeah, that’s a nice area there. It’s not too far from Tarrytown either. Anywhere from there to Ossining would be easy commuting distance to Tarrytown. And route 9 traffic isn’t terrible except at the height of rush hours really

I dunno, probably not. The wife is leaning towards someplace easier to get old, something coastal maybe.

    Heaven's waiting room.

GL, what about The Villages? It would solve one issue you have. You don't need a car, just a golf cart.
