Nah, Southern Tier runs right to Liberty.
Buick Grand Nationals and GNX had the turbo 3.8L V6. 276 hp and 360 lb ft. made it the fastest production car in the anemic 80s. Faster than the corvette and mustang gt’s. Some say real world numbers were closer to 300hp/400ft lbs.
Lightning rod xmsn shifters were Hurst and exclusive to Olds 442s but you could easily swap them.
Yea, growing up in Corning I always thought of Binghamton as a crossroads kinda like Syracuse. From Binghamton, north takes you to 'cuse, northeast is Albany, east is the city, south is Scranton or goodbye NY; and west could be anything: Rochester, Buffalo, Canada, Cleveland, etc.
To me Broome's the end of the southern tier, anything past you are just leaving the area for another one.
...meanwhile onto other upstate territorial disputes:
way beyond the DMZ between Hofmann's & Zweigels' territories, there is the small yet feisty Helmbold's

that map seems to show it as the eastern edge of the Greater Niagara region but I don't agree with that. I also don't like calling it part of the Finger Lakes region bc the Finger Lakes are most definitely south and east of the Roc and have always seemed to me to be an entirely different geographic area. Best description I've heard is calling Rochester part of the Genesee Valley region, specifically located at the thriving delta of the mighty Genesee River.

Back in the 80's when it was one of the few thriving Upstate cities Rochester was an aspirational location if you lived in Western NY. Now, it's taken it's rightful place with the rest.

okay so what do we think about this map?? I had way too much time on my hands at work today and tried to summarize some of the major recent discussion points from this thread.. I think we're getting close but there's still a lot open for debate. I'm open to any and all criticism/suggestions/feedback/judgement, etc.

formerly an ambassador for a few others, but the ski industry is... interesting.
Fukt: a very small amount of snow.
Is Utica Club still the official beer of the Genesee Valley or are you expected to crack a cream ale when you cross the border?
I thought Rochester seemed pretty hip but admittedly we had started drinking as soon as we hit 15 north of Williamsport. We know plenty of kids that did cool things in bigger cities before moving back and doing those same cool things in Rochester. But it's not so gentrified that the crusty, rust belt bars have been forced to leave the neighborhood. That's not a bad compromise.
I am not sure anything east of i-87 is really the Adirondacks. And you left out theTaconics. East of the Hudson is it's own special kind of weirdly special place.
requesting criticism? judgement?
...brace for impact !!!
move that effen horizontal line down to the border where it rightly belongs. making fun of pennsylvania was one of the few chuckles we could count on in the southern tier

That brewery kicks ass!
“Aspirational” is an apt descriptor for much of the lesser-developed Great Lakes region.
I always considered the Western edge of the Southern Tier to be the Erie, PA Chick-Fil-A. It’s straight on to E’ville from there.
On a completely unrelated note, I saw today that the Tom Green epic Road Trip was released today 23 years ago. The film starts in Ithaca and heads to Austin (not Boston), and ends back Upstates. Many laughs were had.
I still call it The Jake.
I assume the heavy vertical line is the Central NY vs Western NY dividing line? But why does it go all the way across Lake Ontario and up into Canada so far? You are also saying that there is a southern section that is further south of the Southern Tier with the heavy horizontal line? Really should just be the PA line of course and not turned up on the left side pointing to maybe somewhere between Westfield and Fredonia or around Brocton?
That is a cool map though. I respect people that are willing to declare a position
solid work here folks, a lot to unpack:
Genny Cream is definitely the 'official' beer of the greater Rochester area, UC's are a close second tho
this was a tough one to place bc CNY is such a general description, I agree that my map seems a bit off but it kind of just happened that way based on other regional boundaries I was looking at
noted, I agree with this, just wasn't sure if people make the distinction between North Country and the Adirondacks - kind of like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square; the Daks are North Country, but not all North Country is the Daks
well since this is the TGR forums I knew I'd be getting some judgement regardless so just wanted to get out ahead of it and welcome the discussion; finding the location of the upstates is more of a group effort in my opinion so all types of feedback are encouraged.
and personally I do think the horizontal line belongs on the border but as mentioned was trying to summarize some recent points
yea that vertical is the WNY/CNY dividing line, i extended it up for clarity bc I already had a lot of labels on there; Canada is definitely not upstate, but some areas are possibly upstate-adjacent.
The shading of the zones extend to the border with PA so that is all considered the southern tier, but the horizontal line was saying that some people consider the parts of the southern tier below the line to actually be northern appalachia/pennsyltucky (maybe downstate?) - per my note above, the map was an attempt at summarizing recent discussion points on our quest to solve the ever elusive mystery of the whereabouts of the upstates
much obliged

Are the southern Adirondacks also north country? Im not so sure about that.
I always thought of the North Country as St. Lawrence Valley extending south to Plattsburgh. Notable NC towns include Ogdensburg, Massena, Potsdam, Canton and Plattsburgh. I don't think of the Adirondacks as NC and Watertown really isn't either. Just my opinion.
