Make make make sell sell sell the party will never stop fucking douchebags
The $3,115 SB115 did in fact show up. And in pristine condition--this must have been a return or a floor model or something that got some minor cosmetic damage. Chain still had factory grease on it, tires looked like they had never been on more than a paved test ride (light dust on tips of the knobs), and it was professionally packaged like a brand new bike.
It isn't a T2 though. Looks like it is closer to one of these "Exclusive" builds offered by Backcountry or Competitive Cyclist for about the same price as a T2 but but with a few different parts from the standard T2:
- Grip2 instead of Fit4 damper
- e*thirteen vario instead of fox transfer dropper
- e*thirteen LG1 Enduro instead of DT Swiss XM1700
But mine has a few other differences that don't match the Backcountry build:
- Oneup carbon bars instead of Truvative
- X01 cranks instead of Truvative descendent carbon
- Maxxis Ikons instead of Vittoria Mezcal
- WTB SL8 saddle instead of WTB Volt
So no idea where this thing came from.
Only bit that is kind of a bummer is the wheelset. Not sure why you would spec an "enduro" wheelset listed at 2126g on a bike like this--would have much preferred the DT XM1700s.
Got it out for a shakedown ride to the top of the resort:
Went up the hill like a dream. Felt undergunned down a black freeride trail from the summit, but that's to be expected and not what I bought this bike to ride. Really noticed the difference when I had a slow-speed OTB fall where I stuffed the front wheel into something that my longer-slacker-fatter tired Ripmo would have just rolled right through!
Need to work on my setup though. By the time I made it back to town, my hands were beat to hell. I thought I got the sag set right, but despite riding it pretty hard, I only used 100mm of fork travel. May have also had a too much tire pressure and the 35mm bars might be stiffer than I am used to as well.
Rear end with the switch infinity felt really smooth though--don't think I need to change anything there.
Maybe a slightly grippier tire would be nice too...rekons? rekon front?

That's a hell of a score dood
Yup, score on that SB115. Geo looks about the same as my Ranger, which is a pretty damn fun bike. I’m still running the dissector on the front and need to replace the rear rekon. Don’t think I’d want a rekon on the front

yup,
I don't think the one-up bars will be a problem. Wheels and tires might have been a disappointment but hard to complain.
So the world is filled with tubular entities. Food goes in one end and shit comes out the other. Sperm goes in and babies come out.
Solid deal for sure. I thought the wheels were an odd choice as well as I was reading the list. Other upgrades are nice, especially grip over the fit.

The OneUp bar ranked 2nd in vertical compliance and was the tester’s choice in Pinkbike’s recent comparison. They’re specifically engineered for that. Nice bars and probably not the source of your hand issues. Gonna get a pair for the lady, who has some hand problems.
I’m on the WAO/77 Designz, rated the most compliant in the test. Some testers even said it might be too flexy for bigger people taking bigger hits on bigger bikes.
I’m a smaller person and don’t notice excessive flex but can confirm they’re easy on the hands.
Nice price on a nice bike all things considered. Build some blingy light wheels for it and keep those E13s as spares.![]()
Yeah, it is probably just the fork and maybe the tire pressure (not used to 2.35s--I started high and let some air out but probably not enough). These factory grip2 forks have too many settings for me to understand!
Considering I wasn't even close to bottoming it out, I think there's just too much pressure. Might have to open it up and check how many volume spacers are in there too.
speaking of grip2, my new fork arrived yesterday
34 std going on the spur

Sexy, stoked to see your Spur build

I'm all about dumb flimsy tires but these seem maybe extra dumb
They're either going to work out really good or really bad for butte next week.
Looks to me like they will go really, really fast, until you actually need to turn into a dry corner. Because you might be in the rutabagas already.
They also look like they will be really, fast, even when you are trying to brake.

TRP Trail Evo brakes and a One Up 35mm rise bar. I just bedded in the brakes tonight and I should get a ride in this weekend to see if they’re an improvement.

Just put some Galfer Pro pads in both my pairs of Dominions. They are THICK. I had to pretty aggressively sand them down to get clearance on my HS2 rotors, even with the pistons pushed all the way back and the brakes freshly bled. They do what they claim though - very little bed in needed, good solid bite.
I'm running some fast Race Kings for Butte. My goal is to hold off Jamal passing me until the last 5 miles (he is in the 100, I start the 50 two (?) his after him.

Rode them tonight and they seemed fine, actually better than the pirelli xc/rcs i took off that had like 600mi. Tread appears to still mostly be there but I've noticed a pretty serious lack of grip lately. Summer dry conditions and worn xc tires are not a good mix. Just wish the 2.35s were available because these 2.25s are a bit narrow.

Took a ride on a local steep, rough downhill (1200 feet in a little less than 1.4 miles) that was kind of the inspiration for the new brakes. My guides would fade and pull to the bar and take quite a bit of effort and arm pump. The trail was probably a little rougher today than it had been with more moisture in June.
The good: definitely more power and more modulation, no fade at all and took a much lighter touch. The bad: every review said the same thing, and they’re right. The lever is too far away even adjusted all the way in. I couldn’t find a natural feeling position for them, and if I took my fingers completely off the levers grabbing them again didn’t feel intuitive at all. Seems like the only real fix is to buy aftermarket levers from Freedom Coast for $100. I got hooked up on the brakes so I can (barely) stomach the cost, but that seems like a pretty bad option for a premium level brake.
I also really liked the bars, even if I don’t notice increased compliance the position felt great (+15 mm riser height vs old).
Mike Sell (Mike Harris) Downhill?

That was my second guess. There really aren’t others on that side that fit that elevation, distance, and terrain profile.
But hot damn, what a fun little thing Drake is!

Replaced the X2 with a coil and some new rubber for the Spires anniversary.
How’s that coil work on the bike? I know that bike is pretty linear.
