A 29’er with a 28 tooth front chainring and 10-42 or 10-50 has a higher top end gear than your setup that’s why some people are good with a 28 tooth ring.

10 tooth vs 11 tooth is a big difference and wheel size matters. I have a 32 tooth front chainring and 10-50 on a 29’er and can easily spin into the upper 20’s. To replicate the same top end on a 27.5 bike with 11 tooth you’re likely looking at a 38 tooth chainring.

I’m on a five year old 27.5 trail bike with 32t and 11sp 11-46 and climb a lot. I wouldn’t mind a touch easier granny gear but I’d far rather gain more top end at this point. I’m spinning out on flat single track and bike paths. I can’t imagine a 28t or 26t in those situations.

Ahh ok that makes a lot more sense. I should’ve consulted the gearing ratios chart! I’ve been wanting to switch to a 29ers so that’s good to know.

It’s both gear ratio AND inch gears to consider.
There are many factors involved but to simplify it:
A 32x10 on a 27.5 gets you 88” of forward movement for one full rotation of the cranks.
A 32x10 on a 29er gets you 92.8” of forward movement for one full rotation of the cranks.

Same gear ratio of 3.2 but different inch gears.
Pedaling at a cadence of 100 in 32x10: (simplified)
27.5 = 26.2 mph.
29er = 27.6 mph.

Interesting, how does that work?

I do notice in the chart that the m5100 and 4100 rear derailleurs are listed in both the 10s and 11s charts so that's kind of handy. Which kind of implies that maybe other shimano 10/11 mtb stuff can interchange?

They offer an 11sp 10-45 cassette with the same 12sp spacing for the XC race crowd. You just use the limit screws to lock out the derailleur. Saves a few grams and gives tighter gearing if you go 2x.

If you can borrow a 28t before buying one, or find a cheap one, It would be worth it. Most FS bikes (at least the ones I've owned/looked at) are designed around a 32t chain ring, 30t at the smallest. That 28t is gonna increase the antisquat in most cases. It may or may not bother you, but the difference is noticeable.

I’d really recommend rolling out your wheel/tire combo as well when figuring out your gears. Tire size will make a huge difference.

fresh bearings all around, dt comps, rim of choice, and a day twisting the spoke key got me some fancy new dj wheels




also finally found an ikon in 26x2.35 so threw that up front and giving it a try since schwalbe stopped making their only good tire the tabletop...

I have a whole “ship of theseus” thing going on here man! once I have replaced everything but the frame, I’ll do the frame, then the wheel set and fork again...

(I probably can’t get away with buying a new bike this close to the kid being born, but the current bike is riding better and better! new tires should make a nice difference...)
