What is keeping you from beeping inbounds?

Even though people are hitting areas that might have slide potential,
it seems they don't see it as dangerous as the backcountry
and that belief leads them to not beep inbounds.

Recent inbound rescues have highlighted the need for fast search and rescue.
Oft times, the inbound rescues seem to have even good odds of finding victims alive,
even after probe lines etc., due to better practices
and the better education of what to do in an avy, such as creating an air pocket.

This video really struck home, just how much beeping inbound could help. If a guy can be saved, after 50 minutes,
with just a probe line and an air pocket, then the chance of someone surviving is much better if they were beeping and saved much earlier.

What's keeping you back from beeping inbounds?

Beacons are too big and bulky. The harnesses need to have at least one integrated antenna. I can't be responsible for thinking for myself and want a centrally controlled transponder that can be turned off by a remote signal.

Why isn't this in your other thread?!

I'm a been skiing in bounds beeping with a full pack a decade before bc skiing became cool

I need to find a pair of bibs with an integrated beacon pocket in the torso/chest area. I've gone back to wearing mine in the harness, as I found the weight of a beacon bouncing around in a thigh pocket to be annoying and very noticeable while skiing. I also wasn't fond of just how much rattling/bouncing around it's able to do in a pocket.

Akin to buying flight insurance. The odds for in bounds avy death the last ten years would be about 1 in 100 million.

Odds of commercial airline death is 1 in 11 million.

Odds of survival in an in bounds burial probably take the odds over 1 in 1 billion.

I don't know why anyone would bother beeping inbounds all the time. I will wear mine only on deep days or if I know the snowpack is particularly sketchy.

I believe I gleaned from somewhere that you are a patroller. You beep every day you are at work, right?

Even if it is inbounds and high pressure and totally locked up?

Nope, not a patroller. If I was, yeah, I'd probably do it all the time out of habit. That makes complete sense.

When my son patrolled at Squaw he was required to wear a beacon with 4 inches or more of fresh or nearly fresh and not previously bombed snow. That was about 10 years ago, may not be current. I don't believe he wore one on other days on his own initiative.

When I patrolled we wore one every day, like Bunion said, even if it's locked up high pressure. Just good habit.
