    the only place I turn off my ad blocker is on sites that I also pay for, when they ask nicely. (NY Times, Wash Post)

    It's the news websites that are the worse about it. Apparently in europe there are laws and there's way less bullshit on a page. Between an ad blocker and a javascript switcher extension you can get most pages a little more decluttered and usually get around paywalls too. If it's one of those fancy interactive nytimes articles turning off js makes the whole thing not work though.

    europe does have the GDPR privacy laws but most businesses care about international customers so just about any mainstream big business is in compliance.

    Mine is called "quick javascript switcher" in chrome. Puts a button next to the search bar, if a website is giving me some stupid shit like a bunch of ads or a paywall, I can click it, it disables .js and refreshes the page.
