I was coming to post that. I have a POC now because I got a great deal and Sweet doesn’t exactly fit me right, but I do love their helmets.

yea I guess I could try to give some helpful fit comments. No idea how 90s Boeris are, but I think my head is an oval. Smith helmets usually fit well, pret do not. That atomic fit ok in the store but agree that it's bulky.

I like the sweet protection enough that I bought a bike helmet from them this year. I think the multi-cert stuff is gimmicky. If you're biking and skiing, 2 helmets vs one is a pretty marginal cost and storage thing

I am going to try a sweet protections ascender next. I’ll keep an eye out for the movement lid.

I’ve found it interesting how if the helmet interior shape doesn’t match my general head shape, it doesn’t work, even with the boa cable system. With the atomic backland, I can tighten the boa cable to the point of mildly uncomfortably tight and still twist/rotate the shell in a nit good way (I’m wearing the correct size).

It took me a long time to find that beori cuz of finding a good fit. I guess I have a funny head shape. It’s literally padding, some sort of foam, and hard shell.

I should toss in too on the SP ascender fit. I found it to fit more like a climbing helmet than other ski helmets I have had. Thinner padding, no ear muffs and thinner straps under the chin and in back. A thin beanie fits underneath easily. Despite the minimal straps and low profile it is not the lightest. I believe the exterior shell is more robust than many

For me, the fit is with goggles on. Without goggles the forehead part of the helmet can be really low near my eyebrows, but when I have goggles on, I have to rotate the helmet back/up, and then what it does is move the ear straps so the back strap goes over my ears instead of around them. At the end of the day, it basically hurts because it’s been smashing the back of my ear down, against a rough or sharp area. Obviously I’ve moved the straps as far back as I can, and it just still pulls right over my ear.
I’m describing the fit on the Sweet helmet. this is partly how I ended up with the POC.

I had to go up a size from my normal medium to a large on the ascender because it's so narrow. We got them through work, I don't see myself wearing it over the Salomon MTN I have for personal use

The BC helmet that I really like, and I’ve seen on a few patrollers, is the BCA Backcountry, but it’s not MIPS.

After using a Smith vantage without earflaps I recently purchased the smith summit. Fit is larger than a vantage. I sized down. But the fit and features are great. I’m not positive that the venting will work to wear it in the uphill all the time but it seems like the best option for me for fit and protection. But it’s only a bc ski helmet fit my usage.

Love my Summit - no discernible downsides for me.

Wear when cold with a thick beanie, cool with a light beanie (included), or cap when hot.

Boa works great and accommodates any of these options.

Don’t notice it all when skinning. I usually keep it on all day after the first lap because I forget about it.

Slightly less protection than a “full coverage” Vantage.

Works well with either goggles or sunnies. Wish it had a goggle retention strap but that is the only negative.

Light, airy, pretty solid construction, fits great. Thumbs up.

I'm the only person I know who didn't size down with their Summit. I was just a couple boa clicks away from max in a Nexus and am at the very bottom of the same size in a Summit, no idea what Smith was doing with the sizing there.

Super comfortable helmet though and have no complaints as long as you're okay with the fit of the fixed webbing of the chin strap.

Make that two people - I’m a medium in both the Vantage and the Summit

    AT Helmet halp

Just received a Mammut Haute Route helmet from skimo and figured I'd throw out some first impressions.

I have a big head. I wear an XL ski helmet in the resort. Currently using an Atomic Savor in size XL that I like. I had previously used a Smith Maze in an XL without the MIPS. I've found MIPS ski helmets to sit a bit too high on my head due to the MIPS components.

Anyways, I tour 80-85% of my days. Right now I just use an old Atomic Count XTD helmet size XL for winter touring and then I bring my size L BD Vapor climbing helmet in the spring or for any big days. But the Count is way too warm for booting up a couloir or something like that. It's basically a light resort helmet. The Vapor is big enough so I can wear a ball cap or beanie underneath. I've been looking for one of the multi-cert helmets for winter touring but most of them are too small for me to fit a beanie or baseball cap under. I've tried on a few including the Salomon offering and some from Pret and CAMP, but they didn't fit well.

The Smith Summit in an XL was an obvious candidate, although I was worried the MIPS might make it sit too high on my head. Plus it's not super light. Saw the Haute Route on skimo, read the specs, and ordered one. The HR was also $90 cheaper than the Summit at full retail.

Overall, I'm stoked so far. The size L goes up to 63 cm, same as the Vapor. I can wear a light hood or a light beanie/buff combo underneath with some room to spare. And I can wear a baseball cap or visor underneath without issues. It fits comfortably and adjusts easily. My Smith IO Mag goggles work well with it. Seems solidly built and it should last a while. Has simple but effective goggle and headlamp clips. Seems well ventilated although I can't really speak to that having not used it. Weight is 405 g for the size L, so pretty light for a multi-cert helmet.

I'll still use the BD Vapor for big spring missions in the Eastern Sierra, but for day-to-day winter touring this seems like a good option.

Nice that’s good to know. We may have similar shaped heads and I’m in the market for a new touring helmet; I have the summit MIPS and like you mentioned, it’s not light and it sits rather high on my head.

I just moved to a Smith Level for resort, which is probably the only smith helmet that fits my head correctly I’ve found. Everything else has been egregiously big or high.

Used the Mammut Haute Route today for the first time. I'm a fan. Fits well. Worked with goggles and sunglasses. I wore it uphill on my second lap (which I very rarely do) and it vented pretty well. Seems like a solid option in the touring helmet market at a good price.

What was the temp like the day you used yours? Living in New England, its either frigid (0 to 15F) or fairly warm (20s and up), so venting is kind a big focus for me.
I'm headed to Baxter in March and hoping I can find a new helmet that I can just leave on all day while in the Chimney area.

I'm trying to find a helmet for more ski mountaineer-y focused days, ordered a Wall Rider MIPS but it has way less back of head coverage than I'd hoped.
Currently I'm using a Smith Vantage without the ear flaps and it has the coverage I want but would be far too warm to skin in.

The summit has a lot of what I'm looking for, but from appearances it seems like ventilation may be lacking?

If anyone has experience with venting on the Smith Summit vs Mammut Haute Route vs Movement 3Tech would love to hear your thoughts!
I generally keep a mesh ballcap on all day and add a buff over it for some warmth under my helmet. I tend to run on the warmer side.

I'm not familiar with the Movement helmet, but I've used the Summit in the past and am currently using the Haute Route. The Haute Route fits my head better than the Summit (for reference, I use a Giro Tenet for resort skiing) and has better ventilation, while the goggle interface is better on the Summit, even with non-Smith goggles. Overall, I prefer the Haute Route as the goggle interface is good enough and it outperforms the Summit in other areas I care about more. It also fits well over a mesh/thin ballcap

I ended up getting the SP ascender. Been wearing it at the ski hill. No touring days with it yet. Tahoe area has had interesting wx lately. I have spent a good hour moving fast on foot in my ski gear in the sun, no wind, and above freezing and only mildly overheating. Also worn on a rainy day, snowy day, a few pleasant days, and a very windy sub-zero day. Always worn with a light-ish weight wool beanie so far. I used my hood on the windy subzero and rainy days, which worked out fine. The buckles on the straps are easy to accidentally open, which is a little annoying. I need to get a lightweight 5-panel hat for sunny warm days.

My kids and friends don’t recognize me.

Hey Anospa, sorry I missed this.

I don't remember the temps when I wore it uphill. It was Tahoe, so probably not too cold. Anyways, I'm still happy with this helmet. I've booted a couple short shady couloirs with it and it was comfy. I still take it off and attach it to my pack for hiking almost every time, unless it's super cold or the laps are very short. But I run warm and mostly ski in CA.

I'll still use my BD Vapor climbing helmet for bigger spring days just because it's lighter.
