    Long dang drive, -gapper -

I have stayed at the Super8 in Tomah and been satisfied
    ( inexpensive, away from traffic, especially if you ask for a room on the north end; worn/aged, but I don't care. clean enough ; there is newer stuff at BRF ) ;

    have Fun, magg.s ! !!

Yeah 7 hours but I got the time off work next week and I’m excited to ski with more mags. If I break the drive up it shouldn’t be too bad.
Thanks for the info on the super8. That could be an option. I am actually thinking about a camp pad and sleeping bag in the back of the suv. Stop at the rest area just before tomah.

Also my plan is to ski Thursday someplace on my way home. I’m open to wherever, but I would love to ski with some more mags. If anybody wants to meet up in southern / central Wisconsin hit me up.

If no one speaks up, a really cool route would be The Great River Road and ski at Mount LaCrosse. Lots of cool scenery along that route. Highway 35 passes right through Dresser WI where Trollhaugen is, and goes right down the St Croix and then right along the mighty Mississippi through the driftless area.

Might want to check if Mount LaCrosse is open on Thursday.

    LaCrosse has potential
( State meet was last weekend, so that's clear ), But it adds a lot of road time when -gapper is Peoria bound.
Cascade is the easy choice -
maggots if you are river bound would be at Welch ( there is some low-angle cruising there, and Chicken will get your attention for a couple of runs ).

If Time is not limiting ( and money is not very limiting,,,. And you haven't been there -
My suggestion is GranitePeak on Rib mountain at Wausau.
on Thursday, GP will have well groomed snow ( where they groom ), And
    That hill has history.
I have not looked in five years, but on-line, IF you can find it and have credentials ( ski school, ski patrol, ski shop ), you could get half-price on-line, 24hr advance purchase.

And I believe Cascade is good for at least a half day, too !

    Safe trip, Please, -gapper
( Cascade and I-94 also give you multiple Camp options, And you can catch a shower at Kwik trip at the western most EC exit or at the truck stop in BRF )

SkiJ- thanks for all the recon. Still not sure what my Thursday looks like. All three suggestions are interesting. Lacrosse should only add 30 minutes to my total drive home, Granite would add about an hour to my drive home. However both of those options would leave me with a five hour drive home at the end of the day.
I do have an Indy pass so granite would be free.
I was kind of thinking about devils head or cascade just because of how close they are to my route. Skied devils head 10 years ago, but I have not skied the other three.
I’ll report back once I make a decision

    revised suggestion -
Cascade. there are a couple of decent runs there ( I hope they have them groomed on Thursday. it has been warm the last couple of days ; we lost a lot of snow yesterday, and today is forecast to be warm, too ( low40sF, here )
( Portage (wi) is calling for 40sF all week, with Rain on Wed. and Thursday ; pack your neoprene gloves if you have 'em )

yeah (yes), with Rain forecast, my revised suggestion is Cascade ( that hill has history, too, just not Rib mountain 1930s history! )

    Safe trip, Please, -gapper !

Hey Ima- Let me know your eta for the Madison area Thursday. I might be able meet you at Devils Head or Cascade after 12:30pm. That said, my lack of mental fortitude prevents me from skiing more than 2 hours a day in the midwest

Skuff- playing it by ear on times, but I think I will take the advice of SkiJ and go to cascade. I should be there before 12:30. I am wanting to be home by 8:00 so I will be leaving between 3 and 4 from cascade. Times should work out to meetup.

hey, guys, Just a friendly reminder -
    When the man-made stuff in the Midwest gets mid40sF warm, it tends to pool water and get 'StickySlow' ( I have only ever had one day of "corn snow" skiing, when the snow opened-up so the water could drain away in the midwest ) ;
StickySlow conditions typically develop by eleven.am or noon, and I won't risk my knees in that stuff !

it doesn't help Skuff- And you may get a good impression of what you will see at Troll. on Wednesday, But

in my experience, I would try to be at Cascade as early as possible knowing that by mid-day it could be rough going ( And raining ! )
    Or
meet at 12:30, scout it out, have a Coffee or one beer. and roll on ! !!

    Good luck !

These are the kind of temps made for slush bump runs down at Buck - sure wish the places I frequent could lay down bump lines like they do there. Last kids' race for year was down there this last Sunday, so got my annual fix in.I'm hoping to make the demo days at Troll again this year. Now that racing is fully wrapped - have a bit more free time.

    I learned to ski there.

    Ha! That statue sounds amusing…

Sorry I can’t join over at Troll. Just got back from a TOP NOTCH week in Idaho, minus cutting the trip short a couple days due to an illness ripping through our group. Good old-fashioned flu I think. I knew I was gonna get it, so I skipped the couple days of nomad-ing through Montana and made straight for home. Good thing too - it started to get me about 6 hours from home, and by morning, I had a 103F fever. Better today though.

I think it’s really cool what ima gaper is doing. Big road trip and making new friends. The kind of shit I did when I was younger. Reminder to myself that I need to keep doing it. Glad that I am a small part of his adventure.

Now it time for me to be a DRAMA QUEEN.

I’m going to be late today at Trollhaugen. Not sure my arrival, maybe 10:45 or 11? Not sure.

I not only have a good reason to be late, I have a COOL reason to be late.

Last summer I hired a local timber crew to come out to my island and clear a spot for a cabin. I’ve got the smaller trees and brush cleared, but there are some big trees that need to come down and it’s beyond what I can do. Heavy equipment is needed, and that means ice road during the winter. I’ve been bugging them for a month, but they have been drilling test holes in the ice and saying not quite yet. Got the call last night that at 7:30 this morning the equipment will begin crossing the ice. I need to be out there for the first hour or more to supervise and get everyone on the same page.

I will head to Troll after that.

Texts sent to ima gaper and GSinister.

Yeah, it’s in the fifty’s out on the island right now. Three days ago it was thigh deep snow, now I’m looking at grass.

These loggers are nervous AF crossing the ice. It’s a week long job, probably worried their equipment might get trapped out here all summer.

Man, I wouldn't leave the good ole boys from LORAX Inc. alone on my island. Might come home to a deforested land mass. And sure as hell don't let them choose the trees to come out.

And you keep the wood, right?

What the fuck is up with the assault of the kid at Tyrol Basin by the owner? Yeah, not paying for a lift pass is kind of a dick move by the kid, but having the owner assault the kid is another.

    It was Monday night.

We were at Tyrol for the ski races this weekend and Nathan was surprisingly cordial. $3 Bush light tallboys and a great place to race and watch racing. What isn't to like about this venue?

Seriously, if the accusations are true, I hope Nathan gets into therapy and figures things out before he cooks his own goose (if he hasn't already). I'm excellent at following rules or at least staying under radar when I don't, but the ugly Nathan stories I have heard from people who cross the sometimes very arbitrary lines he enforces are numerous...it sounds like kid was guilty of theft of services, but still, constraint is required.

My girl broke her first gate in competition in the 2nd Slalom race, trying to keep up with the U20's, earning a well deserved DNF and so by tradition, we got to take it home. Pic is with Chestnut head coach.

    What a day!

I got to Trollhaugen about 20 minutes after opening and quickly linked up with GSinister and ima gaper. GSinister had a non-mag posse we dubbed The Grumpy Old Men, these dudes ripped and were a lot of fun. Slushy corduroy. Fun shit. Hung out on their sunny deck working on my farmers tan.

ima gaper wanted to see my island, so off we went. It’s a little over an hour from Troll. Left his vehicle on shore, and I think I might have freaked him out a bit with driving across the ice. The logging crew had already gone home for the day but their equipment was still out there. Holy shit did they cut a lot down. Had a gigantic bonfire going that will burn for days. It’s going to be a great spot for a cabin.

Finished up with burgers at a lakeside tavern.
