    April 15th -

    my thanks and Thank You to Harry for his "stoke" and his +++Positive vibes+++ through this thread...

    You have renewed my appreciation for skiing! in the midwest - Thank You.

    the cables / "haul rope"s are off the East double and the triple at the hill formerly known as indianhead , and
    the main parking lot is full off NEW chairlift parts ( and the old triple chairs ) -

    That hill will ski differently in the future
    ( I have a lot of memories there... )

    I hope you have a great Summer, magg.s ... ! !

    peace. skiJ

    I just found a little mid-summer stoke on the Indy Pass website. A great short film by TGR about all the awesome independent Midwest skiing. It has me excited for winter, and using my Indy pass to check out some new places to ski halfway close to home.

    Hey SkiJ,
    I was hanging around Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands the past couple days. On the county road between Washburn and Cornucopia at the height of land we passed what looked like a defunct ski area. I figured if anyone on TGR knew about this place, it would be you.

    Edit: found this online

    hey, Harry -
    Valhalla is new to me. There are a bunch of hills up north that used to have slopes cut : some even had rope tows.
    interesting to look down the pictures in the left margin, to see how the forest recovered - from the 'Mt.Valhalla' pic. from the 1930s, to the picture from the 1960s.
    it is hard for me to imagine the north country largely tree-less as it appears to have been for decades after logging exhausted the great north woods - the - 'inexhaustible forest ' - in the 1880s...

    I hope you enjoyed your Time near Lake Superior / I hope it's been a good Summer, Harry (!)
    Thanks for your 'shout-out'

    I didn't realize the CCC built ski jumps? Anyone know of other cool CCC projects in northern Wisconsin?

    A long running day dream of mine is hiking, skiing, and documenting some of our lost Midwest ski areas. Maybe this year's the year...

    I believe the original chalet at Rib was a CCC project ( I believe it is mentioned in the film imbedded last week ) ;

    also the buildings at Copper Falls State Park have that 1930s look ;

    the bridges and shelters at Amicon SP, also ;

    Oxbo resort on the Flambeau is not CCC, but it dates to the 1920s.

    similarly, Little Bohemia resort at Manitowish Waters was supposedly a 1920s/1930s gangster 'hideout' ;

    Telemark, Hardscrabble, and Christie are not CCC projects, but date to post-WWII entrepreneurs
    ( Christie still operates ).

    There's a website that has a lot of the old ski history..

    No, my recollection is that it is just like 7 rope tows lined up.

    The ones in the beginner area are probably running very slow though--you could try the various methods for pulling a kid on a rope (from back before they had magic carpets) like putting them between your legs and pushing them up with your knees/thighs.

    There's also Villa Olivia in Bartlett--I never went there but they even have a chair...they also have a conveyor lift but it looks like it is only for the tubing.

    Thanks! I’ll add these to my running list of places to take a closer look at next time I’m in the area

    OK, I’m going deep into a rabbit hole here….

    Looking at that Valhalla link I posted, it mentions a coach named “Snowball” Severud. I’ve been hearing that name all my life. So I googled him.

    He was the Head Coach for the US ski-jumping team at the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, and then in 1968 he was Head Coach for the Canadian team at the Winter Olympics in Grenoble.

    SkiJ: look at his hometown.

    hey, Harry...

    I had a hunch when I saw where Severud was from, the EauClaire Ski Club would be party of the story...
    After WWII, EC Ski Club became a prominent organization in ski jumping ;
    I knew two guys who had gone to the Olympics, one of whom was a multi-time National Champ. ( Billy Olson ) ;
    Keith Zuehlke was a contemporary of Billy Olson's, and his son, Reed Zuehlke, was on the Olympic Teams in 1980 and 1984
    ( it feels to me like he was injured before the 1980 Olympics ) ;
    I don't know the Ski Club history well, but the name I have been reading for fifty years feels like Ted Lahner.
    There used to be a jump on the south side of EauClaire near where the hospitals are now ( - and well upriver from Silver Mine - ) that the landing hill was on the southside bluff above the Chippewa River
    ( not too far east of where the Mt. Washington complex is now )

    Ski jumping thrived in the midwest for decades in the 1900s ; it's a smaller club now.

    Thanks for the memories, Harry !

    It was 94 here yesterday. Kicked the ac back on Friday and it has been doing its good work all weekend. 9th latest 90 degree plus high here in record. River temp was 71 degrees at 9 am which is absolutely ridiculous for October. No wetsuit needed.

    And so, so, dry.

    El Nino usually brings warm and moist this far south in the Midwest ski circuit. Temps that hover just above freezing all day and all night.

    Hard to to be a little worried about the upcoming ski season.

    Brule Thanksgiving slalom camp again this year. We haven't been to Trollhaugen camp for the last 3 years. I love the coach who puts on the Brule camp (PS), he probably crossed paths with Buster at JH back when Pepi was putting on the camps up high in the summer and he is at all of our races. I first met him at a bar in deep Wisconsin, I was there riding bikes and he was at an Alfa Romeo rally. Talked skiing. Met him again years later through ski racing. Of course he still has no real idea who I am but dude is an unforgettable character. Plus the camp is 4 days instead of 3 with no fluff.

    We do need to figure out how to make some turns this winter Harryz or canoe copia.

    We bought Epic passes this year because my stepson is living near an Epic resort again. It was kind of depressing for me for a while, but I'm coming around now that the days are finally shorter than the nights. Can't ski JH every winter. My daughter needs to see how the other half suffers as well to ensure she is a well rounded human.

    That's cheating..... I've got two lifts to pull this weekend, and already pulled a couple 16 foot sections of dock. After that, just a measly 100+ ft of steel dock and the pontoon, then 3 boats to winterize...
