Had an excellent run down Cardiff this morning. Went back around noon and had a mix of kick turning and walking down. That changed quickly.

I know this isn’t the usual audience for this kind of thing, but Utah Skimo (group that does the Tuesday night races at Brighton) has some support from BD this year, and the first race on Dec 10th has some crazy raffle prizes beyond what’s usually there: BD poles, skins, and Helio 76 skis. If you’ve never been, the Tuesday night series is not exactly a “skimo” race... regular touring gear (Radical STs, Maestrales, this sort of thing) outnumbers the spandex probably 4 to 1. We get ~100 folks a race, and I won’t out anyone but there are some other mags in regular or semi-regular attendance. Races are $60 for the whole season or $20 at the gate, just sign the waivers at http://utahskimo.org , only required gear is a helmet and a headlamp, you’ll want both lol. It’s pretty fun to crash around a skinner with 100+ other headlamps. After the race we usually hang out at the Alpine Rose (I think it’s called) at Brighton and do prizes, raffle, and just have some beers and socialize. The “race” aspect is pretty unofficial, someone usually claims a best # of laps of the course but it’s mostly just another way to wander around with slidey things on your feet. We got splitboarders, frame AT gear, tele folks, anyone who can go up on skins really. Also if you wanna volunteer (which means either skin the course before the race and set flags or just stand in the tent before the race and check names off an ipod) you get an extra arms length of raffle tickets, which will be sweet for this race especially. BD will have a van this year at all the races so you can demo some gear if you want, I think they’re gonna have hot chocolate and stuff too. I won’t plug this again here, but it’s a pretty fun, super casual, super friendly crew who shows up on the regular, with at least a couple mags officially or semi-officially involved.
Hit me up in pm if you have any questions

Nice HTFB! I'm regretting not springing for the Alta upgrade this year.
I'll be around the Bird the next few days if anyone wants to take some laps. Army green flylow jacket and a dark orange helmet. Probably be on blue/green bodacious or cham 1.0s.

Psyched to make a coupla laps with ya.
Only free runs I've had so far...
Mountain skiing great for no snow a week ago, eh?
Birdfeeder specially.
Lil report from route running of late:
Now that its quit snowing and we've shot the shit outta the place, remotes and collapsing in the controlled areas very infrequent.
If things go well tomorrow, look for expansion into the Shoulder and the High T Tuesday.
Appreciate the help turning this place into moguls from the dirt up.
Got a few more days to help this happen before the next storm.
Gonna pay big dividends rest of the season.
Love the aggressive program they're running round here nowadays...Time spent skiing cannot be deducted from one's life.

Finally put the bike away and accepted it was winter.
Toured out of Alta on Sat, wanted to take a look at the carnage on N facing Patsey. Full on winter up there, single-digit temps, windy, waist-deep drifts, density inversion about 18" deep with another 18" of fluff below it. My hip flexors are still cringing from such heinous trail breaking on D1. There seems to be an unusually large contingent of cornice-dropping idiots out and about, all competing for the most shared #utahavy post. Too bad they have to flush every chute with slides that aren't big enough to completely clean the old snow...
Watched a hermine follow us on the skinner and come within 2' of me. Awesome critter, it stuck with us for a bit then ran past with a pika in its mouth, easily 1.5 times its size. Driving down at 10:30 or so we were convinced something was wrong with the road. Cars were only coming up intermittently, Alta and Bird lots were 1/2 full, and the weather was clearing. Maybe people were burned from the Friday chaos?
Late start on Sunday and complete change of pace, 39 degrees at the base, pinwheels forming on S faces, and a stout sun-crust in place by 4 PM. Still low tide with an abundance of sharks, it made the Emmas exit quite interesting. It's all very reminiscent of the start of last season, hopefully that trend continues!

Oops.
Hi T didn't wait for today, opened at 3 yesterday.
After most had called it a day and left.
Good call to test it without a crowd like 1st thing in the AM would have tested it.
Plenty of good skiing left out there still...Time spent skiing cannot be deducted from one's life.

Kind of with you on this one, although I don't know if we can say for certain that leaving the snow really would prevent future slides or improve danger later. But I wonder....does it have a better chance of healing if left alone instead of being provoked right after every storm? It never gets a chance to settle these days because the avy hunters are out on it immediately.
Right now the instability is pretty deep and persistent, might be better to keep flushing? Maybe there is a better chance of destroying the facets if they are exposed? Discuss

According to this tribune article, it sounds like UPD and UDOT are not on the same page in regards of how canyon restrictions should work. It also sounds like we shouldn't expect enforcement at the mouth.
In other news, the Bird is skiing great with plenty of surfy wind buff on the upper mountain. Rumors of more terrain opening soon.

I think big slides can scrub weak layers to the ground whereas smaller ones run on the weak layer which gets re-buried at the next storm. There's also no chance of building a thick enough layer to bridge the weak layers if people insist on flushing slopes 10x per season. I doubt there's a golden rule there, it just pisses me off that half of the avy obs these days are intentional trigers via cornice drops on slopes that were not going to get skied and would have been better off left alone. Do people really need to confirm that a 40 degrees N face that has received 60+ inches of snow on top of a rotten base with consistent winds is going to slide? Those aren't particularly valuable avy obs in my book, obviously sketchy slope is going to slide if provoked... Crowdsourcing condition reporting is a doube-edged sword and people seem to take immense pride in submitting a report, even if it's of very limited value. There were days last year when you'd have 8 reports from Days Draw, all basically the same. I get that everyone is a unique snowflake and wants their experience to be recognized but if you pull up the UAC page and you're the 9th report of the day for stuff off Chickenshit Ridge it's probably fine to abstain. Unless you've observed something completely outlandish that is, in which case share away.
I saw 3 people pulled over this weekend, a couple on Saturday (one around the gate parking lot in LCC and the other right across from the Church at Alta) and one on Sunday, for what appears to be obvious 2WD + bad tires situations. I laughed at the Sunday one, Tesla model S with visibly bald tires. Fuck that dude, if he can afford a Tesla he can put decent tires on it or stay in the valley.

I think UAC staff has to approve each obs from the dirty unwashed masses anyway, maybe some of the super low-content ones (or repeats) could be left out in the future... as someone who reads them all and almost never submits, I do like that a lot of people are out there giving info, but agree that there's a good deal of repetition. And the #utavy instagram thing strikes me as kind of a failure and probably contributing to this avy-porn-seeking, though that might be my bias based on my IG feed.

Any other AltaBird passholders just get this email? I'm guessing somebody screwed up a mail merge, but I guess there is a chance they are going the way of JHMR and giving out Ikon passes.

True, they do review everything and if they started filtering people would probably get butthurt about their obs not getting published and stop contributing...
I'm going to print a "Proud poster of UAC obs and expert cornice dropper" sticker and put it on my car for serious gnar points.
