    Pretty funny.

Kinda feels like musk is going to run tesla into the ground and then sell it for a fraction of what it was once worth.

If for no other reason, I’m glad I broke up with a woman I was seeing that drove a Tesla…there were other reasons, but I’m still glad.

    Fuck Elon.

Well, we got an electric golf cart, aka Fiat 500e. Paid at the top of the range (9k) for a minty 2018 with 25k miles. After getting everyone's feedback, I really wanted to try an e-golf, but theyre pretty hard to find around here and they cost at least a few thousand dollars more.

I don't think we'll put more than 1,500 mi a year on it, so if we can drive it for 3 or 4 years and sell it for 5K it will feel like a win. It really does everything we need from a city car -- I would never want it as my only car, but as the second car it seems perfect. Driving it continues to feel hilarious.

Ramcharger seems to be finally taking shape.

EV Ram with a gas generator on board to charge the EV battery.

140 miles on battery, 690 miles total range and can tow 14,000 pounds.

This is the most interesting EV to me right now, but no way on earth I could afford to replace my F150. Hope it does something to move the market.

I'd edit the post above but it'd blow it up.

There is no direct connection between the gas generator and the drivetrain. The gas generator only functions to charge the battery with a 202 kw v6 gas generator.

Samesies. Word on the street is Ford's doing an EREV Super duty for 2027. I'm not usually a new car guy, but if it's real I may change my tune.

Get to know Electric Tire Shredder and read his guide. Just today our 500e stopped working and got stuck halfway out of the driveway with the “service PRND” error. I was able to fix it by jacking it up and manually cycling the park pawl motor using a hex wrench based on posts I found in this forum. It was our first major failure in four years.

I like full EVs but the EREV concept makes sense to me for that rare vehicle that is driven long distances in remote places in winter - especially a larger SUV/truck/van that might be used for multi day/week journeys. If I had one I think 80%+ of its total driving could be electric but it would retain flexibility for big trips. A recent drive in BC over remote mountain passes in driving snow/rain, and strong head winds, fully loaded with gear, roof box, winter tires and family in the dark had me just annihilating gas (range) in my Subaru on an all-day drive, and the thought of having to add a lot of extra time waiting at chargers was not appealing. For less extreme trips, summer, day trips, city, etc the EV cars are ideal already.

Yup. PHEV / EREV is the answer for the larger adventure / roadtrip vehicle.

Ideal future state use case for us:
    - EV wagon for my commuter
    - PHEV/EREV SUV/Van for my WFH wife doing the school drop.

Ya I’ve been shilling the Ramcharger in the Trucks and RV threads for many months now but tbh I’m bummed it turned out to be a 7500 lb pig. Stellantis hasn’t really been on the ball when it comes to weight reduction (aluminum body etc) and it shows.

How much of that could be from needing a motor and a heavy battery/hybrid system?

Below is AP article from yesterday. Trump administration put a halt to buying armored vehicles from Tesla. The idea of armored vehicles was initiated during the Biden administration in May of last year. Per the article no contract for armored electric vehicles was ever issued.https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk...72abd69feedec4
Looks like the original Biden admin was for $483K of electric vehicles, and not specifically Teslas, for the state department. Apparently, it more recently got changed from $400K to $400M, and specified armored Teslas instead of just EVs.

“I don’t think this is a clerical error. It was likely someone who is new in [the] State [Department] who decided, ‘OK, we’re gonna do this with Tesla,'” said the former official, who was not authorized to speak about the matter.
Then, it appears that after things came to light, the whole thing got re-edited to exclude Tesla, and then it got axed.

All that adds up to seriously long ranges for every version of the electric CLA. Mercedes says the dual-motor CLA350 has a range of 479 miles on the European WLTP cycle while the single-motor CLA250 will do up to 492 miles — that's nearly as good as the EQS, which will do 507 WLTP-cycle miles in its most efficient guise from a 33-kWh-larger battery pack. In the U.S. EPA cycle the longest-range EQS is rated at 390 miles, so expect the CLA's rating to come in at around 375 miles. Mercedes has said the CLA will have an average energy consumption figure of 5.2 miles per kWh, which bests the Lucid Air and Hyundai Ioniq 6, the two most efficient EVs currently
    Impressive

Musk being a MAGA surrogate is just a wild fuck-you to his core customer base. It would be like the CEO of PETA teaming up with Cabela's. IDK if its a wildly autistic read of the room, or if musk truly doesnt give a fuck and is putting the "fuck-you" in "fuck-you-money" into action? We recently bought an EV. 2 years ago it would have been a Model Y. We went with a Mustang Mach E. It's pretty cool.

I test drove one of those last month while my Bronco was in for service. I was seriously impressed.

I think Tesla has lost whatever edge it had because I’m seeing a lot of electric cars that just seem better all around than his glorified Camrys

BYD which is probably the most capable car manufacturer on the planet, maybe the world's top manufacturer, just announced 1,000-kW Charging. That means charging ~250 miles of range in about five minutes. BYD wants to manufacture and sell cars in North America. We should allow it under the condition the company sets up a joint venture with an American carmaker along with mandatory technology transfer. Fair is fair, after all

BYD already sells them in NA -> mexico.

I believe there may be one seen in SLT (with MX plates) in the not too distant future.

I just bought a 2021 Mini Cooper SE.

It's basically the i3 drive train in a Mini Cooper body. Only ~100 miles of range, but that means it stays relatively light and it feels basically like a little electric go cart. It's going to be around town, commuter (16 mi round trip), and errands car (none are more than 40 mi round trip), so don't think range will be an issue, but we will see. We have a larger ICE car and the smaller ICE car it is replacing probably hasn't been driven more than 100 miles more than 3x in the past 3 years, so we seemed to be in a good position to buy low on the lower range electric vehicles that no one seems to want.

I'll be curious to see if that kind of ultra fast charging has a significant downside on battery life.

Dan PDX talking about the Fiat 500e, not the last post in the thread no matter what
I like those for the same reason I was interested in the Mini. If one would have popped up near me, I would have checked it out.

Does anyone have experience with the VW ID.4? I'm taller with a long torso, so most of the similar sized EV's have the drivers aids right in my line of vision, while the ID.4 sightlines were pretty good. I'd love to hear about anything that breaks, rattles, or becomes annoying.

Also, does anyone have any real world experience on the mileage loss due to a Thule box on the roof?
