I rarely see patients on these medications and I’m sure they are a damn nightmare to get insurance approval on. They did a price reduction in 2018 and they are still out of reach and under prescribed.
They are definitely expensive and hard to get, though I imagine that will get much better with time. Having a CAC score in the bottom quartile sounds pretty high risk to me, and given the likelihood that someone's first MI will be their last it seems crazy to only prescribe them *after* someone has an MI.

Insurance companies prefer people to die quickly, at the lowest investment possible.

I do have Restless Legs Syndrome although I don’t know that it’s worse with the statin. Resuvostatin makes me nauseous for as much as an hour after I take it. Red yeast rice gives me migraines after a couple of days of it.

Has anyone ever read "Younger Next Year"? I just started it so still learning/digesting, but wondering what the collective thinks.

Been giving the statin another try with coq10 at the same time.

Seems to help counter the side effects for me. Headed in for blood work in a couple weeks so hoping it’s working.

OK, mags, who can help me out with this?

Been playing and training pretty hard this summer. Played a full outdoor soccer game on Sunday, felt great, and while I was tight and sore the next day still felt pretty good, so I decided to fit in a leg lifting session. On my last set of squats something in my low back grabbed. Felt like a muscle spasmed and went tight. This happened once before and it took around two weeks for everything to feel better - maybe slightly longer.

I don't want to be out of commission for two weeks.

I think I'm gonna try to get a PT appointment, but wondering if any of you have any ideas. Right now my entire rear pelvic area is super tight. Extremely painful to get out of bed in the morning. Loosens up during the day to where there' almost no pain as long as I don't make any sudden movements. lots of tightness int he middle of my back and especially on the right side. Lots of tightness just above my hip bone. I feel like something got overworked and just spasmed and hasn't let go.

    Brilliant ideas anyone?

I'm certainly not a PT but rolling around on a lacrosse ball helps me for similar tightness. It can be fairly painful so ease into it gently. Once you can lie flat on your back in top of the ball then start lifting your legs to your chest and that puts even more pressure on the ball.

It could also be your psoas muscle so look up some stretches for that. And then go to a real PT.

Heat and NSAIDS. Google back stretches.

What do you want to do? You should be taking it easy at the very least.

Moving will help, but no sudden movements. As long as it's not "bad pain" you should be ok.

Definitely stay way from lifting until any discomfort is gone.

If you are lucky, you may be better in a day or two.
If you've really strained something, it could take 2 weeks (or more) to recover.

I once had my back lock up on me and a good massage therapist was able to help by carefully moving my legs in a way that allowed my back to release. Obviously the specific movements would be related to your injury. For me, I was in the fetal position and the therapist manually manipulated my leg back and forth which led to immediate relief.

be careful with rolling because it could further stress the injured muscle.

I’d be cautious about stretching and getting too aggro with the rolling / lax ball until you’re a bit less acute or have received a diagnosis. I’ve managed to make things worse doing that stuff more often than I’d like to admit but my back is pretty messed up.

Nobody wants to be... but you're old now. At least mentally prepare for it.

Yeah. I’ve definitely had PTs caution me about over stretching my back. Gentle stretching and rest are your best bets til you can see a pro.

Also, don’t forget about the front of your hips. Hip flexor tightness puts strain on the lower back as well, so balance out any stretching you do

From your brief description, my non medical arcmchair diagnosis is that odds are high you pissed off one of your SI joints and caused some muscle spasms. Look up SI joint issues and if the symptoms fit, then its a pretty easy and straightforward recovery mostly just involving gentle movements, some corrective exercises to get things firing properly again, and taking it easy for a week or two. Everytime i get SI joint i am just thankful its a shorterm issue and simple fix instead of something serious like disc injuries.

Disclaimers: 1) IANAD/IANAPT; 2) LOTS of different things could be causing your pain; 3) even for a professional it's extremely difficult to diagnose something like this via text.

That all said, low back pain that is offset to one side near the hip is often an SI joint issue. I get this occasionally, and a PT I've seen suggested this SI self-pop procedure and I've found it pretty effective. It's simple to do and carries very low risk of making anything worse.

Personally, I think this is terrible advice. Heat should not be applied after an inflammatory episode, it should be ice for the first few days. And in all likelihood the spasms are not due to back tightness but probably front tightness. Stretching his front side and "firing" his back is way more likely to help him get out from this than doing back stretches.

My source is anecdotal, based on a lifetime of figuring out what works and doesn't with similar episodes.

The old ice versus heat debate for injury. I’m not up to speed, so I’ll look back here for future entertainment.

Happens to me, just got to the wrong side of 40.

Fluids, roll AND activate your hammies and hip flexors, glute med, IT band…hit psoas w a lacrosse ball or kettle bell, and stretch out better AFTER your next full soccer game (and wait another day on lifting).

Google exercises for each, clamshells, glute bridges, dynamic stretching. You’ll be good to go in 4-5 days.

The heat isn’t a cure, skip it, but if you want to ice after doing the exercises that’s fine.

I've used those home elctro stim machines before. Is there any research on if those are actually effective? They seem good for temporary/immediate relief in my experience.

    Two types
Electro muscle stimulation which builds muscle mass and strength. Pretty high intensity. Lots of research shows it's effective.
I use it for quqds, hamstrings and butt.

Tens, low intensity, just for pain
Not sure how well it works.

Depends what’s wrong. If it’s a tight hammy pulling on your back, it’ll be limited. It’s doesn’t exactly loosen you up for long periods. Kind of like a heat pack making you feel better/looser for 30 mins.

Messed up shoulder? Twisted knee? Increased blood flow via the stim helps. I had bicep tendinitis in college, down in my pitching elbow, was on stim twice a day for 2 weeks. Shit works (when complemented with PT exercises).
