I hated it. Aside from the flying video I thought the plot was out of an 80’s Chick Norris film or something. Especially the end.
The original was 10x better.

He’d be retired long since or at least be an admiral.

I know lots of guys in the Army that were over 30 years and only O-6 (Colonel in the Army, Captain in the Navy). Making flag rank (general/admiral) is all politics. Some guys didn't want to be generals (for very good reasons) and took jobs that ensured they wouldn't move up.
I only knew a handful of people in the Navy and Marines that had over 30 years and most of those were senior enlisted.

I think the point of Maverick being an O6 instead of a 2 or 3-star is that he went for the fightertown life instead of gettin' with the Program and shuckin' and jivin' for the Man like the rest of the corporate sellout pricks in his year class.
To your post, look at this fucking guy:
Rudolph Ernst Boesch (/bɒʃ/ BOSH; January 20, 1928 – November 1, 2019) was a United States Navy SEAL, and two-time competitor on the reality competition show Survivor.
Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Boesch enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17. He became an Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) Frogman in 1951, serving on two UDT Teams. He was chosen as one of the first SEALs, becoming chief of the boat of newly created SEAL Team TWO in 1962. Starting in 1968 and 1970, Boesch completed two combat deployments during the Vietnam War, where he earned the Bronze Star for heroic action. During that time and later, Boesch set physical and operational standards at SEAL Team TWO. In 1987, he became Senior Enlisted Advisor for United States Special Operations Command. Designated the "Bullfrog", the longest-serving SEAL still on active duty, Boesch achieved considerable renown within the force for his physical fitness training regimens and his military appearance. After 45 years of continuous service, he retired from the Navy in 1990 as a master chief petty officer.
The oldest competitor on the inaugural Survivor: Borneo at 72 years of age, Boesch finished in third place. The program was the top-rated show on American television during summer 2000, and with his gruff, cantankerous manner, and his politically incorrect "Rudyisms", he became one of the show's most popular contestants. Boesch set the age record again when he competed on Survivor: All-Stars at 75. He parlayed his fame into several other television appearances, including hosting the show Combat Missions in 2002.
Hadn't been to a theater in probably 3 years, but fixed that with a top gun viewing today.
It was awesome. Great demonstration of the fact that real airplanes look awesome, and cgi ones look so-so. Which is also why the 3rd act was somewhat less awesome - too much computerized action. That, and the whole premise of an unprovoked attack on a nebulous enemy with 5th gen planes was kind of goofy.
But yeah, silly plot and a bit of cgi were easily overlooked because of all the ass kicking and name taking.
Is it too soon for spoilers? Cause I have thoughts about the ending
I know a two guys from high school that both wear one star. One army and one navy. Navy guy was cool, pilot. The army guy wore aviators in high school and rocked the 5.0 mustang. I can totally see him being general material.

Finally saw it. It delivers exactly what was promised. Loud, unapologetic action and military porn.
And for those saying OG Top Gun was far better, I watched that earlier this month. Take off the nostalgia glasses, they're equally good movies for the pure action fun and enough romance and muscly dude sweat to keep the ladies interested. Add in the fact that the cockpit filming was real life maneuvers and Tom Cruise getting squished by 5 g's made it all far better.
Wait, how can we trust this guy^^^ He's clearly not DJSapp
I refuse to pay to see anything with that cult looney-tune in it.

I totally forgot I was going to come back to this.
SPOILER:
Am I the only one who thinks the story would be better if Maverick had died instead of ejecting and getting rescued? I think it completes the story arc better, and that part with the F 14 was a little too hokey IMO. The way it works out I don’t think he actually learns any lessons.
It feels like a common thing in action movies right now and I don’t like it.
I haven’t watched MI:2-6 yet,, so why would I watch 7?

If I had a dollar for every time capitalism was blamed for problems caused by the government I'd be a rich fat film maker in a baseball hat.

Finally watched it tonight. Great action and the dedication by the actors to put themselves into those real life cockpits was impressive. It really was a fun movie
SPOILER: However having TWO impossibly last second "blow up the enemy a millisecond before they take out Maverick" scenes was a bit much.

Wait a sec, I thought this was a documentary!
I thought it was pretty shit overall. The flying was........neat but overall the plot was hammered dogsit. Operating F14.......and then a STOL. Come the fuck on.
The rank thing was funny, but I guess thats the way they played it since the highest you can go in the AF before they yank your flight time and give you a command is O5? I imagine the Navy is probably the same?
