This is more out of curiosity than a beta request - if I ever find myself out there no amount of swedish fish will save me anyway.

Huge fan keep it up etc. etc.
Most parties do the trip south to north, with a cache at either the Kingsbury or McMurdo huts. Kingsbury is a heli accessed ski touring hut (so you can coordinate with the heli company), while McMurdo is sled-able (so can be a do it yourself option).

It seems like the weather was consistent from the first attempt. How hard is it to gauge the weather for the comstock given that it's not something that can really be done in a day trip?

I think they discuss this well in the video. The Comstock is on Mount Dawson, which is the highest mountain in the area and creates it's own weather. So even if the forecast is calling for mostly clear skies, you still run the risk of strong winds and a big cloud sitting over top of it. Greg was right when he said you really need to go during a big high pressure system, when there are no clouds anywhere for days in a row. We didn't really get that in BC from mid-March until the end of April. There was a stretch of high pressure in early March when they could have gotten in under blue skies and cold temps, but then they would have also been gambling with the deep persistent slab problem that plagued the snowpack in BC most of last season.

Nailed it. I saw that weather window in March but was in Switzerland with the fam shooting for Here, Hold My Kid. So even then with trying to balance The FIFTY with family life, it would've been a gamble with that persistent weak layer. What I'm hoping for this year is that early season super cold clear spell with no persistent weak layers and a big enough season where the line is decently filled in... a lot I know but one must hope. Those big spring high pressures are so hit and miss and with convectives being such an issue in the Selkirks in spring, even then a high pressure doesn't guarantee success with weather.

Enjoyed the Split Couloir episode and the cautious/persistent approach to not ski a couloir with what was it "scabs and warts", and to ski it in a style that met your risk tolerance. Don't see that dialogue very often and it makes a great point about objectives. Are we just skiing it to tick it off a list, or to enjoy the process within boundaries to keep it fun, and not just risky. Very cool.

    Very true.

I think a lot of accidents happen because of time constraints.

You planning on skiing something a certain weekend, so you're committed.

And this happens with a guide also. If there's a persistent weak layer, if you live nearby, you would just wait until it's safe.
But if you have a guide booked a few weeks in advance, he might go anyway, pwl be damned.

I had two dingleberries attempt to bribe me to open terrain I had closed in our am meeting this past season. Their reasoning was essentially, "well, we drove a long way and it looks cool"

I happened to just re-watch the first comstock episode last night and was so rooting for you guys when I saw this new one come out!

As has been said many times in the thread it’s amazing to watch the decision making happening in the moment and the longer format this season gives us so much more. Can we look forward to “directors cut” re-releases of earlier episodes in the future? Please?

Question. In the beginning of this new one you’re going over schedule for the month and trying to decide if you should make the trip up or stay and do split. Am I wrong, or did you guys basically go all the way to Rogers pass and then turn right around and do split and then fly right east to Baffin?

Dang. I’m exhausted just typing that!

I think some of the best episodes in this series are the ones where you turn around. Thanks for showing that, and normalizing it for a broad audience. And props to you and Bjarne for still making entertaining videos in the process! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Is Baffin Island going to be showing at the wild and scenic film festival?

As the number of lines left to do ticks down, I would happily watch “Cody Townsend and the Search for 51” in which Cody chases “good” conditions around North America skiing cool things not in the book.

Cody - important question: when are we getting an episode with a Misfits soundtrack?

I've been thinking of doing a video podcast style revisit to old episodes. To talk through them a bit more, give more insight to what was going on in the episode, or that moment, or whatever...I just keep myself way too busy to get it done.

To answer your question, yeah it was a fucking nightmare of driving. Drove down to the east side to scout, drove up in BC, had one day of prep, went out there for three days (we condensed down to two for the episodes sake), slept one night in town and then drove 24 hours straight back to Split where we got shut out by that windstorm. Drove back home to see the fam for two days, then drove back to go do Split for the final time. It sucked for sure.

Oof. And that answers a question. Was wondering re bringing food for another day or two in case of localized weather. Man, the needle threading is a bitch! But each episode is so real and so great - kudos
