Well what the fuck. I'm new to this shit! Throw me a bone here

It seemed initially to me like this was totally unnecessary unless your Julian Assange or really into some kind of porn that your not supposed to be into, but when you start talking about "out of market" or "blacked out" athletic events, my ears perk up

You choose what servers you want to be routed to and then once you are connected (hopefully to secure servers depending on the quality of your VPN) you surf away as per usual.

I have used IPVanish for years. All of their servers are in-house globally and not just your average VPN.

Brave browser is also really good for privacy as an fyi. I believe very similar to ghostery without the need for an addon

VPN's have servers all over the world. Normally when you connect they hook you up automatically to the one closest to your location and assign you an anonymous IP address but you can also connect manually. Depending on what you want to watch and the streaming service you're using just select a server in a location that isn't blacked out and stream away. For example my home location is SW CO. My streaming service doesn't have Altitude, which carries Avalanche games so I got the NHL app. The app blacks out Avalanche games for my location but if I sign into my VPN in another location, say Dallas before I launch the app it thinks I'm there and I can watch the games. Keep in mind that some streaming services will limit how long you can stream from a "remote" location and how many devices you can stream from if you're "outside" of your home area.

DuckDuckGo is just fine in my opinion. I recommend it to the tin foil hat people out there that are worried about Google tracking and history or Bing and Microsoft. As for how did it get switched- really hard to say- could be an update to the browser of your choice that you are using, could be 3rd party application that made the change and hijacked the browser search preference (usually they get a fee for doing that) and redirecting you to the DuckDuckGo. Just like Adobe and some other free software (Acrobat Reader, Flash Player, etc.) when you install them may have a will you allow us to install or make changes to your setup (install McAfee, or Google Chrome browser, etc.) then you have to uncheck the box to not allow it. Many do not ever read, they just keep clicking next, next, next through it like a Zombie...

You could be infected, but again DuckDuckGo in my opinion is not like some other search engines that are out there like MySearch or 100's of different ones that if you search to see if they are legitimate and safe will be identified as "Potentially Unwanted Programs" - PUPS and can cause virus like stuff to happen and be a problem with web site redirection...

Maybe, they have been around since pretty much 2008 or so and started getting more notice in 2014 when Safari (Apple) and Firefox (Mozilla) added them in the search option preferences for their browsers.

Also, whats "Ghostery"?? and uh, at the risk of sounding like the complete computer JONG that I am, whats VPN??
VPN is a Virtual Private Network- private transmission of the traffic - corporate or business networks use it for location to another remote location (branch offices or work from home) traffic. Also so your ISP can't see what is transmitted (helpful for public networks or wifi connections as well as connecting and authenticating off of servers elsewhere to fool your exact location is another reason some use VPN's.

Isn't DDG the default search engine for Firefox?

I'm trying this out. It was giving me a few glitches the first day but now doesn't seem to be. When I was uploading pics and vid the box seemed to disappear (that's what she said)

I picked up a VPN since this thread started, not sure if it's doing much for me and it's made a few sites not recognize me when I go on them each time but overall seems okay.

^^that's the same VPN I got, I saw a couple good reviews of it. Now I've got a VPN, and an encrypted email, all I need is Tor and I'll be ready to do something shady. If I think of something.

    Download and install this: https://www.utorrent.com/utweb-index

After you connect to a VPN go here https://yts.am/ and browse for films. Click on the 720 or 1080 links on the pages. Wallah -- Free movies.

DDG also has a browser, in addition to the search engine. I like.

DDG is dope. Search algos definitely weaker than Google in many cases, but I want to support their mission. Figure the only way they’ll improve is with more usage. Maybe 3/10 searches I resort to google.

I paid for a VPN maybe five years ago so I could stream NHL and world juniors broadcasts that are blacked out. It often slowed down the streaming to the point it was almost unwatchable. Can't recall the name right now. Are VPNs better now? Private Internet Access seems to get a lot of recommendations. Any others to consider? I'd want to make sure it has servers in Canada - aside from that, speed would be my main priority.

    Never heard of DDG either.

Same. DDG results are lacking for very specific topics, particularly related to coding and technology. As you said, I give them a shot first, but sometimes end up using the big G.

I am in the DDG bändwagen. I also use their browser on my phone. Love it. My only gripe is that swiping down doesn't reload the page like in Chrome. Maybe there's a setting I need to find. And I like that with Nova launcher I was able to ditch the Google search bar that moved to the bottom of the screen in Android Pie. I replaced it with a DDG search bar back at the top of the screen. Fuckin A Ray. And yes, I resort to Google search sometimes. Of course we have a bunch of teh Chromebooken, so Chrome is the browser there. However, I use DDG there too now, for what good it does me.

    For Android, get:

Orbot, Orfox, Firefox Focus, DuckDuckGo, ProtonMail, Signal.

Set to default, enable on startup, enable secure startup, encrypt your device.

    Free.

    Fully encryped.

Built in VPN that you can enable or disable with the flick of a digital button. You can also individually select which apps will always use a VPN.
