I feel like this thread diverged from "best" to any western you've seen in recent memory.

Seriously. Half the films listed could barely be called memorable let alone "best." The Trinity series "best"? Gimme a break. Those aren't even the best of the spaghetti westerns.
And for the record, a "modern western" is not a "western". OK? Westerns are period films. The period ends when the West is closed and the car and modern weapons arise. If the hero and villain are driving cars instead of riding horses, IT'S NOT A WESTERN!
That's driven home in The Wild Bunch where Peckinpah has the gang confronted with the new reality of a car and a machine gun. These men lived through the glory days of the West but now its 1913 and the gang is scuffling along in the ragged edges of civilization. None of them had ever seen a car before. Only one of them is even vaguely aware that airplanes had been invented nearly a decade earlier. They can't even wrap their heads around the idea of a flying car (airplane). These hardened killers are staring their own futility in the face: the era of the horse and the six-shooter is over. Unfortunately, it's all they know. The wild bunch goes out in a furious blaze of blood soaked glory because there is nothing else left for them. They are characters in a genre that has come to an end, just as the The Wild Bunch marks the end point for the sanitized western.

Oldie but real goody is Big Jake. The quotes are endless...
"And now *you* understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all... your fault, my fault, nobody's fault... it won't matter - I'm gonna blow your head off. No matter what else happens, no matter who gets killed I'm gonna blow your head off. "
Didn't see Silverado mentioned either. Great Western.
