MoMo's convicted of polygamy
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...cing-1.4722332
6 months house arrest, community service, probation but no jail
a real deterrent eh ... pretty weak sauce IMO

Damn, I heard even Colorado City has a brewery in it now. Taking Human Rights aside for a minute, I kind of think the notion of fringe polygamist groups occupying isolated tracks of land in Western Canada/US is kind of fascinating .

I know, I havent had much luck with even one wife for very long !
Fringe polygamists ain't so great for the members of the community, not for the multiple wives or the boys who have to be driven off, I think these 2 should have done some jail time to send a message
any bets these guys will do it again ?Lee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

from what I have heard the polygamists really try to buck and/or work the systems as much as possible so it will be interesting to see what they do
house arrest- meh- they never want to leave anyhow bc they look for more wives within their set community anyway.
I really dont GAS about the having multiple wives thing (but agree- one close relationship like that is already enough for me too) - it's that they pray on too young girls and they have very few choices and they often outcast the young men bc they are "competition" for the older men who are looking to add wives.

A shrinking gene pool. I wonder if some of the kids start getting crooked deformed. Used to have them roll thru Banff as tourists. Seemed dense and aloof. Had to be shown the simplest things, I guess they’d never used a coin locker before

I met a polygamous (sp?) wife here in Jackson. A wife of a well known professional in JH. He had two wives. But he married a few (more) while on a profiessional mission to Africa.
I asked around. Everybody knew. Nobody cared.

I actually don't really think polygamy should be illegal. People can organize their personal lives however they want for all I care.
The hard part though would be setting up the law in a way that prevented the exploitation that have historically come with some forms of polygamy. At the very least the legal part would have to be set up as a contract between all three people rather than multiple dyadic contracts. It's also hard just because the groups that might practice polygamy are also groups often culturally prohibited from getting divorces so there is more possibility for control there. Still, legal recognition and a right to a substantial share of group assets would be one check on exploitation that doesn't exist now in extra-legal polygamy.
Now with all that said, I'm in the "I can barely handle one wife" camp.

There was a pretty good run down on why polygamy made for bad economics and social stability. On a one off scale it's kind of who cares, but as small amts of men get all the ladies, a lot of guys get left on the sidelines with no future to work toward.

The biggest problem is that when the husband dies there are a lot of poor widows with no marketable skills splitting up the estate and some will inevitably become the financial responsibility of the state--ie, all of us. So it is a matter for the community to decide and not just the participants.

I think this is true if polygamy was practiced on a large scale, but it is unlikely to be in the US. Right now, the group with the biggest lack of marriageable partners are actually (esp educated) black women. And marriage rates overall are declining. I don't think polygamy would be widely practiced even if legal.
But aside from that I'm a little hesitant to associate legality with social stability. It's often been used to justify not changing things (though I understand it as a more general goal).
Why will they have less marketable skills than they do now? Do we assume that there is just some untapped market out there of women wanting to do nothing but stay home who can't find a single husband to support that but could share one and do it? It's not as if a bunch of women who are currently going to Harvard are going to drop out to become third wives. And, just based on marriages tend to shake out, it's likely to be the well off who attract multiple wives anyway. Why let poor men have even one wife?
