My reply was for someone being retired. But even a working stiffs making 50k household income, 1 kid, is doable. How do you think America is running now?

100% of those people have essentially zero savings, and a sizeable majority receives some form(s) of public assistance.

A grand total of 21% of the population receives govt assistance, which would still place them in the minority with a median household of 54K.

I know this is a ski forum and most of you haven't ever even made that little, but it is not impossible to live a perfectly fine life at 50k a year. Literally millions of people do it.

Millions of people are also financially inept. Income and financial ability are not in direct correlation.

Nevermind that comment was based on retirement. Context matters!

    I hear you saying:

Health insurance, having a kid and saving for retirement is vastly over rated.

Capitalism now means survival of the fittest capitalists while weeding out the weak.

    yay for america 2018

My mistake, I was looking at older data when it was up in the 30s. Still, it's almost a majority of those below median, and 57% of Americans have <$1000 in savings. It's not because they're all financially inept. No matter how you slice it, 50k/yr w/ 2 kids is not easy street.

    Its not poverty either.

Latest iphone and whole foods organic produce probably aren't happening, but there are worse things in life than being average.

If someone has less than 1000 in savings and is an able bodied, working adult, that is financial ineptitude, we are talking more net worth there through. My point was that income does not equal financial aptitude. Think a professor who takes less to teach than work in the private sector, or just regular old elementary school teacher. I don't think that many teachers make over 50-70k.

Adkman, like almost everybody it seems, you like to paint with a wide brush based on your own pencil thin experience. If you're always right about 10% of the population that you address, are you always right? Anyway, America is a shithole of a country. Lousy schools, declining lifespans, crumbling roads and bridges, terrible debt. All the fruits of the experiment in democracy have been picked and it's time for the .01% to move on. They already are really citizens of no country. They are citizens of the world. The experiment is over.

$50k a year from retirement investments, is that what was meant? That's a lot. Isn't it all post tax? Plus you likely are old and have no dependents.
