Another fun weekend of sailing/racing on Lake Champlain. This was a longer than usual race (31 miles).

    Goniff took some video:
    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2gq_cTlmlbI

I took a couple of pics...

Ominous as we headed toward the start:

It was sporty on the upwind leg. Forecast was for winds less than 10 knots so we put up the big headsail. Winds near the windward mark were more like 15-18...I think the skipper was very close to ordering a sail change as we were teetering on the edge of control but we made it around.

The weather got nicer but sadly the wind died on the downwind leg. Our boat is great upwind and in anything above 10 knots but is pretty slow in lighter winds. We lost all of the lead we had built up but at least the weather was nice:

We ended up 2nd in our class and the post race hang was awesome as the weather just got better as the evening wore on.

We stayed with Peruvian Saturday night and did some pleasure sailing on Sunday.

    Great weekend.

Haven't needed them but we're racing until late September so they'll get used. They fit great. Thanks again!

    Layin out the 420!

    Great shot!

Picked up our son from another couple weeks at Camp Seagull (a seafaring camp in coastal NC) before school went back in session two weeks ago and all he’s talked about was all the sailing he did. The kid lived on the pier and in the sail deck every day.

Going to take him to sail some dinghys and then Harbor 20s the next couple weekends before going to see family on Lake Erie for some J-boat racing before the season (up there) ends. He’s jacked!

Glad to hear your kid is into it! We need the next generation before sail dies out even more.

Harbor 20’s seem like a great boat… I imagine them to be modern Rhodes 19. I’ve seen a few but never sailed one… roller furling jib on the self tacking boom seems like a nice idea for lazy and/or older sailors. Might try to find one to sail for an afternoon.

    Yeah, I'm stoked for him.

Harbor 20's are indeed great boats; very enjoyable cruiser that you can take out for the day with a handful of people with low effort. There's a fleet in HHI and I first got introduced to them at another fleet in Chautauqua Lake, NY.

Funny, the kid above spent the Summer in Chautauqua with a college friend working on the docks and teaching sailing. Home for a couple weeks before heading back to college. I’ll ask them about Harbor 20’s.

Off Topic… is Chautauqua a cult or intentional community?

    Some good news for Pensacola.
I can only hope they bring good pizza and bagels with them.

Triumph officially approves $8.5M to help Pensacola become America's Cup training base

BP oil-spill money will be used to help the Port of Pensacola become a training base for American Magic, a New York-based yacht-racing team that is an America’s Cup challenger. The board of Triumph Gulf Coast, a nonprofit organization that helps administer settlement money from the Deepwater Horizon disaster, unanimously gave approval Thursday to an $8.5 million grant for work at the port as part of the project.

Erica Grancagnolo, Pensacola’s director of economic development and neighborhood services, pointed to the potential economic impact of the training base and said there is a “buzz” of support in the community for the project.

“I've worked in local government long enough to know that no matter what you do, there are always naysayers out there. And I have not heard one individual in the city of Pensacola that is not thrilled to death with this project,” Grancagnolo told the Triumph Gulf Coast board during a meeting in Panama City. “Anytime we do community outreach events with the council members and the community, it's nothing but questions from the audience about American Magic. Typically, ‘When am I going to see them practice more?’ ‘When can I see them on the water?’”

The $8.5 million is on top of two other grants awarded this summer.

The city received a $2.6 million grant from the Florida Seaport Transportation Economic Development program and an additional $3.9 million grant from Gov. Ron DeSantis' Florida Job Growth Grant.

Combined, the grants will fully fund the new Maritime Center of Excellence that will serve as the permanent headquarters for the New York Yacht Club American Magic sailing team.

The grants will fund the transformation of the partially complete Warehouse No. 10 at the Port of Pensacola into the Maritime Center of Excellence. The construction will include a 50-foot extension of the building as well as a new dock and boat ramp at the Port.

The American Magic team made its first trip to the Panhandle port in July 2018 in advance of the 2021 America’s Cup. The grant is part of $49.1 million needed from the New York City Yacht Club, local, state and federal sources to renovate the partially completed Warehouse 10 at the port, along with the design and construction of a dock and boat ramp, according to the grant agreement.

Operations of the training center are projected to create 170 jobs — 150 tied to the racing association and 20 linked to the port.

“Once complete, the warehouse will house advanced manufacturing and boat building, ocean sciences and maritime technology research and development, as well as marine industry testing,” a news release from DeSantis’ office said when announcing the Florida Job Growth Grant.

The project is expected to take 24 months to complete and be done in time for when American Magic returns from the 37th America Cup race in Barecelona, Spain.

The team moved from Pensacola to Barcelona earlier this summer and has already begun training there.

Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves has said if the team wins the America's Cup the city is ready to help bring the next America's Cup race to Pensacola.

There is a cheap hobie cat for sale near me and I'm considering getting one for about the 8th time. I live maybe 10 minutes from Lake Mead (where I took a "intro to sailing course a year or two ago). Water levels are still really low and launching anything with a keel is extremely difficult, so a dinghy or beach cat would be the way to go. I just fear that given the set up time, i might not get out much. I really want to sail with my son/wife, but a Getaway would be a lot easier for that. I'm just cheap for hobbies that I want to test out.

Nice! Chautauqua is a special lake. It can howl N-->S and make for some rowdy sailing, and its very quintessential Americana from a summer retreat destination; much like a miniature Champlain or other NE lakes. The Chautauqua Institution is an intentional community, kind of a throwback to Upstates resorts of long ago or arts communities throughout rural NE. It's been two decades since I've been to an event there but I was impressed when I did go, even if I was probably the youngest person there at the time.

That's a massive win for the panhandle. I hope they bring the Cup home so I can see some AC racing a relatively quick drive away.
