Congrats NW_SKIER! I just did the exact same thing. As of July 20th I'm going to go out on my own and try to start my own business. It's the sort of itch I need to scratch.

Scary and exciting. Kinda like dropping into a steep chute with no option but to send it out the bottom.

Edit: Sorry to break up the excellent string of puns going on here. I really curdled up the thread.

If left out long enough, this thread will go sour.

    You guys are killing me.

Yeah Maz. Milk futures being in the shitter are not encouraging for the future of my business. I lost 40% of my work after the 2009 crash. Got it all back with lots of hard work. Not something I want to go through again. The biggest reason I am getting out is definitely the damage to my body though. My neck and my elbow are starting to give me consistent issues and the repetition of my work is only making matters worse.

For those that don't know, I run a hoof trimming business. It's tough work, but the pay has been fantastic. I have a house, a great start on a retirement account, and the stability to walk away now and work for far less doing something I will look forward to going to work everyday.

I am going to work for Spartan Race as a build crew lead. Been running the races for a couple years now and volunteering after I race each time. They kept pushing me to apply for a spot on the team, so I finally did, and I got the job. I start end of next month. I won't be making big money, but I enjoy the races and I'll get to see a bunch of new places. Where I go career wise depends a bit on opportunity for advancement with the company.

And I'll have a lot of time off in the winter to ski and annoy my wife.

Is a book of clients something another outfit would be interested in buying? Might as well milk it for what it's worth.

    Good luck.

When you say good morning to the frumpy older woman who answers the phone in the sales office and she says "I don't like you and I don't know why I don't like you but never speak to me again." I went to my office and packed my stuff. Turned out I looked like the twin brother of her dentist husband who ditched her for the 27 year old hygienist. You dentists will get it.

I mean, for a bit there my gameplan was close, in the way that space shuttle challenger was looking awesome until it exploded and vaporized its occupants.

    Hey Yeti,

I suggest you take what money you have, come up here to Canada and stay with us for super cheap/to free (we have a spare room), and we can go rip the Lake, Golden, the Pass, and Revy all this winter.

    Seriously.

P.S. Also, bring your mountain bike so we can rip the rest of the summer too.

P.P.S. Also bring your fly rod, there's good water about 25 mins from my door.

One of the owners/boss wants to can me because of stuff a former coke head employee has been telling him about me.

Said boss has never spoken a word to me or seen any of my work.

Also, their new thing is firing anyone who puts in a two week notice.....so I guess I'm getting fired soon.

I just started a couple months with a newish construction company that is growing quickly. There are expected growing pains but it is exciting to see opportunity within company. They keep trying to push superintendent position on me and
A: I have never wholly responsible for commercial job and
B: I don't really want to be and

C: I've always seen seasonal construction jobs as way to make money to get on to next adventure. But over a decade of off and on work a reluctant career is emerging.

Problem is I've been planning for last 6 months on how to tap into yuppy fitness tourism market. I saw the move you are making and I felt a spike of encouragement.

I invision 'base camp' here in alaska and hawaii where clients come to Adventure like a local and get run Into the dirt with coached workouts in beautiful places.

I think I'm still a year out from making big move, might as well suffer a year of increased responsibility and gained experience in construction... Sigh
