I'm building a staircase up a steep hill from the garden to the driveway. Any guess on his support spacing?

Thanks. I hate projects like this. Not big enough to justify hiring it done yet something that could easily be fucked up and done incorrectly.

Not old enough to be an expert, but given that it's PT lumber on a comparatively steep grade, I would guess you're looking at 25 years+ before it starts to go. Maybe significantly more.

Just thinking of shittily-installed PT fence posts that sit in poorly drained soil and concrete still managing to last 15-20 years. Bring that concrete above grade and slope it away from the wood!

FYI, we really never did straight stretches. We would bend them around and have landings and such, so that we could blend them into the landscaping. Well we were a landscaping company, so...

Just be sure to use ground contact-rated PT lumber.

A straight line going up a bluff looks like a wall of lumber from below. Not only ugly, but is not discreet to people walking up the beach and from the lake.

    (2) 4x4’s = 7” of rise

Visually, it will look a little thin, ie not proportional

But it would work fine for height

How would you secure that? Rebar thru them both into the ground?

We did #3 rebar 2’ long driven into ground for sleeper at base of stair. Then, just pegged one layer to the next with spikes

With the double construction, it may be beneficial to use the rebar to keep them fixed in plane at each step

So I was working in the HD lumber dept and a lady says she needs a deck pronto on her new house for insurance and would tell her how to build it. I asked her if she had a hammer and a saw. She said yes on the hammer, no on the saw. I told her to go buy a saw and I'd show her how to build a bird house.

I've found that the secret to productivity is to always carry some round tuit with me. Just started about a month ago, I've gotten more done in this past month than I have in a long time.
