Yeah. Some people stack rocks. It’s kinda zen. I like seeing them.

And when you see them it’s on a park trail that has log and stone steps and gravel and no overgrowth to get you there instead of literally bushwhacking.
This isn’t surprising that gratuitous cairns are lost on you. Cairns are navigational and not something for the average instamoron to express their creativity on public lands.

Take the Enchantment core area in the Stuart Range WA, cairns led the way through a sometimes fragile environment, now there’re gratuitous cairns everywhere leading nowhere.

"Gratuitous Cairns" would be a good name for a country rock band.

Presidential range in NH above treeline. Cairns are essential. Picking your way in no vis conditions between Cairns really sucks.

Years ago while doing field work, I decided to kick over every cairn on the way up to our field site that day…. Suffice to say, we got lost trying to find our way back to the trailhead. Not “need to call search and rescue” lost but “ended up a few hours late” lost

I don't know if I've ever been in the country. I've been in forests, fields, mountains and deserts, where's the country around these parts?

Was hiking on Aland (SWE) . There was a unique geological feature--a soccer pitch sized area covered completely with individual rocks. Except that people had piled every single rock into a cairn. IMO the people who build cairns for anything other than trail marking, property corners etc are the Karens. Leave the wilderness as free of manmade structures as possible. Trails, steps, water bars, blazes etc are necessary--primarily to keep the masses from trampling randomly over the landscape. People do get lost following decorative cairns. AFAIC a cairn is a way for somebody to say I was here, I am putting my mark on the landscape. Go tag a fence or something instead.

And while we're at it, keep your fucking locks off of every scenic bridge in every nice place. Until there is a randomized controlled trial of relationship longevity with and without locks.

Rock stacking in natural, wild places = lame (aside from directional markers)

Rock stacking in well trodden, easily accessible places = whatever. Not my thing but you do you.

Wa just planning on dropping words to this affect under annoyance. Worst place ever for bridge locks = Japanese Tea Garden.
There is at least one bridge in Europe that they've banned locks because the total accumulated weight is approaching the maximum weight limit. Would love to be watching when the camel straw lock was affixed and the bridge collapsed ...... with nobody on it, of course .......
    except the love sick idiot.

People taking the rocks out of rock lined drainage channels to build cairns. They line those channels with rocks for a reason.

We had 3 banks at one time. Chittenden swallowed by someone I forgot then Peoples who left. Howard was absorbed by TD Bank and they also closed. Leaving Northfield Savings Bank! a locally owned small bank.
    Peoples would have embraced 3rd.

That's the kind of ingenuity I want to see in someone who works on my house or car.

The wrench and pad lock are locking a cabinet in the office at Freeport MacMoRan in Safford. I snapped a quick picture and then asked the secretary "what's in the closet that requires that level of security?" She snapped back "secrets" and then shuffled away.
