    Prohibition Again!!!!!!

I've decided I want prohibition again!!!

    It's for the children!!!

I'm sure it would be very easy to document that by banning alcohol we would save many lives lost to the various illness brought on by alcoholism. We would also save millions if not billions of dollars spent treating those alcohol related illnesses. We would save thousands of lives a year lost to drunk driving along with saving the lives of the people riding with drunk drivers and the people drunk drivers kill by crashing into them. Image how many children's lives would be saved per year. No more worrying if your teen driver is going to get all fucked up and kill themselves and their friends. We could also reduce domestic abuse and those killed by their abusers since alcohol is almost always a factor.

    It's about saving lives!!!

Prohibition doesn't work and never will.

All it will do is make more people lawbreakers and organized crime flourish. Times change but people don't.

If it would save even one child's life, then yes.

Actually, a lot of people probably haven't. Control states (as opposed to licensing states) have made up the majority of liquor control regimes since the end of Prohibition.

You can do elasticity of death studies with excise tax levels. Or elasticity of DUI or wife-beating arrests for that matter. And - good news here - one of the big questions about legal weed (from a public health perspective) is whether it would be a complement or substitute for booze. The good news is that it seems to be a substitute, with net public health benefits.

    "Re-gaining Unconsciousness"

First they put away the dealers,
keep our kids safe and off the street.
Then they put away the prostitutes,
keep married men cloistered at home.

Then they shooed away the bums,
then they beat and bashed the queers,
    turned away asylum-seekers,
    fed us suspicions and fears.
    We didn't raise our voice,
    we didn't make a fuss.
It's funny there was no one left to notice
    when they came for us.

Looks like witches are in season,
you better fly your flag and be aware
of anyone who might fit the description,
diversity is now our biggest fear.

    Now with our conversations tapped
    and our differences exposed,
how ya supposed to love your neighbor
with our minds and curtains closed?
We used to worry 'bout big brother,
now we got a big father and an even bigger mother.

    And you still believe
this aristocracy gives a fuck about you.
They put the mock in democracy
    and you swallowed every hook.

    The sad truth is
you'd rather follow the school into the net
    'cause swimming alone at sea
is not the kind of freedom that you actually want.

So go back to your crib and suck on a tit
go bask in the warmth of your diaper.
You're sitting in shit and piss
    while sucking a giant pacifier,
    a country of adult infants.
    A legion of mental midgets,
    a country of adult infants,
    a country of adult infants.
    all regaining their unconsciousness

Take away alcohol, and there would be much more angry deaths by gun. So keep alcohol, and save lives.

I'm sorry, are you actually delusional enough to think there are "health" benefits from smoking pot? Let's not discuss the thought numbing effect for a moment, anyone who thinks inhaling hot noxous vapors into the most delicate tissue in your body has no long term effects is actually quite delusional. Just because it's the flavor of the day doesn't mean it's good for you. This does not mean there are not lagitimate beneficial uses for pot but there are huge trade-offs. Actually if you process out the psychoactive chemicals - THC ei marinol for appetite stimulation in chemo patients and antispasmodic and antiepileptic effect, for actual madicinial purposes, no one would want to take it.

I see at least 5 people weekly admitted to the hospital for hyperemesis directly related to heavy marijuana use (smoking the equivalent of 3 bowls daily).

Alcohol has horrendous health effects if you drink even lightly (1-2 drinks) every day for years on end. Most of which doesn't appear until there is significant long-term damage done.

Personally ALL nicotine products should be banned as they ALL are bad for your health.

The population health studies I'm familiar with suggest that legal recreational weed reduces legal alcohol consumption, resulting in a net public health benefit. But it's not really my field these days. Am I outdated on the research literature? Please point me in the right direction if I am - I don't mind working papers or proceedings publications, if that's what you have in mind.

    Thanks!
