Haha. Ok, ok, touche. BUT since Wal-Mart's been so successful in killing off small town Main Street mom & pops around the country, sometimes it is literally your only choice in town for certain things. I avoid Wal-Mart at almost all costs when I can. Now, Amazon is the new Wal-Mart, but far, far more nefarious. They're not just killing off small town Main Streets though. This time, they're out to take over the entire freaking world!

It's not just self-check out, in and of itself, that bothers me so much, but more as its a symptom of a much larger problem being the overall erosion of basic services that used to be standard across the board.

We're seeing major decreases in customer care everywhere, from grocery stores to airlines. Why is it such a big deal for us to expect products and services to improve over time, not get demonstrably worse? Another recent casualty? Apparently customer service at Whole Foods has just gone down the crapper with the recent Amazon buyout. "There's no time to take care of customers! Gotta increase profits this quarter! Improve efficiencies! Better have done your hourly OTS checklist! ('I just turned mine in, sir') DO IT AGAIN! It's a new hour! [sound of whip cracking] You! Yeah, you...that customer with a cart full of groceries! You check your self out. We don't have time for your money spending nonsense! And hurry! [whipcrack]"

I subcontraced to install some self-checkouts at one of the Walmarts here. I felt dirty. Well, the floor I was crawling around on was also really dirty.
    No longer stuck.

You'd be wrong about this, also.

I prefer the self checkout but hate it when you try to use your own bag and it doesn't recognize the items you put in. so annoying

But for those that talk about the jobs- I am more likely to go to the self check out when my fav checker is working that zone- for Jacksonites it's the short eastern european guy that has worked at Smiths for years- he always says "Have a beautiful day." I heart him

I still miss Larry's Market so much. In the Seattle area it was one of the first big, up-scale grocery stores. Staff was so great, their cheese selection/monger was amazing as was the produce/seafood/meat and wine departments. Their home section carried Le Creuset and Emile Henry

I heard somewhere that most of the people who work at WinCo will retire millionaires.

Employee owned...it's a good store to save some cash. Their meat Dept is hit and miss here locally. Good pork and chicken, beef not so good. Didn't know the employees did that well though. Good to know.

Winco has good prices but quality is questionable and it's worse than Wal-Mart for its attraction of trashy patrons.

not so bad here, mostly those of Hispanic descent. The store does cater to that segment of the population here in SLC valley. Lots of prepared meats specific to spanish/mexican dishes. Pre cut carnitas meat, pre marinated carne asada, pre marinated chicken, etc..I really like it for that particular aspect. I cook a bunch of "mexican" type dishes. Their produce tends to be pretty good if you know how to pick fruit and veggies, none seems USA sourced though which is a downer. For all everyday type items their prices are awesome. I like bagging my own groceries too. I typically can get it done much faster and more efficiently than any of the "store" baggers.

Walmart? Heh. This seems like a good time to drop into this first world problems thread and mention that the local WF, Trader Joe's, and Sprouts don't have self-check. But for that matter neither does Albertson's.

It's good to be solidly middle class.

Though i cant imagine how much busier the few local TJ's in utah would be if wine was on the menu too...fucking places are insanely busy, and honestly very small stock....

That's part of their business model. They run smaller stores, farther apart, with substantially smaller parking lots, and they get very picky with location.

That's funny cause they picked a terrible location here. It's right there at a major intersection, but it's impossible to get to.

Wegman's is massive. I walked in and almost relived the coffee isle scene from Moscow on the Hudson. I stick with WF. I know where everything is, I know most of the people working there, and TJs and Wegman's have diluted the dbag population.

Our local Grocery Outlet functions as a TJoes type of place. Surprisingly good cheese etc but selection varies constantly. Some other GO’s are sad news.

No self checkout lines. Maybe that’s the secret to low prices with profit.

Our Grocery Outlet is an eat-it-today place. The code date may go thru till tomorrow, but unlikely.
