Stealing in the supermarket self checkout line

    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine...eckout/550940/

Apparently it’s a big enough issue that some chains are bringing back human checkers.

I’ve not taken advantage of this but then again I’m in the boring, law-abiding-therefore-votes-Democrat category.

I don't steal but I don't use self-checkout unless I have to. The "they're charging you to work at their store" line is correct. Give me a discount for self-checkout, or hire someone to run another register. I always use Amex if I do have to use self-checkout since they have to pay a higher fee on it, that's how fucking petty I am.

Yeah I’m on the fence on the ‘charging you to do their work’ logic. If enough people are using self checkout that it allows Safeway to charge slightly less on the marked product prices, I don’t lose any sleep about those shoppers waiting an extra 5 mins so they can have a human checker ‘for free’.

But seriously: wtf is wrong with people. You want stuff, pay for the stuff.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

It's a fairly low-margin business and I shop cheap, so I figure I'm benefitting on some level from the self checkout bullshit. But I avoid them if I'm buying more than one bag's worth of stuff or any produce.

Our local Albertson's took all the self-stations out, to 'provide better customer service'. They sort of forgot that it's impossible to staff easily in JH, so there's never enough checkers and the lines are long. Thankfully Smith's is just a mile away. And cheaper...

I love self checkout if there is no line. I'm usually faster than the checkout person if there isn't produce involved. If there is a stack of 50+'s in the self checkout it is usually slower than using the staffed checkout line.

Self checkout is way better than staffed
    Usually more available registers
    & faster checkouts

I guess if you get caught stealing at self checkout in an organic store, you can say you 'spaced out.'

In a non-organic store you could say store's failure to provide you training to cashier caused mistakes.

I use self-checkout when I can provided there isn't a long line. Bottom line for me is how fast can I get out of there? Checker with no line but self-check with line I'll take the checker and vise versa.

KO, I'm replying on this for you and all of the left here; this is not an intentional political post in non-polyass. board.

Quite a few months ago, our local grocery store pulled out it's automatic checkers and put back in people and this store in across from tanglewood in Houston where 5 million is a low price for a house, a very rich and conservative area.

Now, I had initially thought it was because people did not like them and preferred the interaction with a checker.

But I see by this article it's because rich conservatives are nothing but cheaters and thieves stealing from the auto checkout line.

(I figured you guys would enjoy that story).

I like to bag my own groceries. I prefer self-checkout. It goes quicker, and I know that I am not getting overcharged by a high-schooler

Steal if you must but the next person who goes into the fucking self chek express in front of me with more than 10 items is going to get a beat down. Or a least a barely audible snide remark.

No self checkout here in Bozeman in the 3 places I shop. Costco used to have them and took them out.

HD still has them and I was pondering getting a new Gas Range and ringing up a box of nails. Too obvious????

Self checkout at supermarkets sucks; being a lush, there’s usually a sixer or bottle of wine in my cart. Scan, wait for the helper monkey to verify my age... wait... and wait...

In college we would go through the self checkout and buy steaks and enter the code for cucumbers.

The machine would weigh the steaks thinking it was cucumbers so no red flags would get set off by the checkstand.

Now that I am more mature I pay for my shit. But back in the day my buddies probably stole hundreds of dollars worth of shit through self checkout
