BRZ would be great if it works for you. The back seats are useless.

If you drive mostly highway miles and can find a reasonably priced Golf TDI, that's a good route too. They come with a 162k mile warranty on all the emissions stuff, the turbo and the HPFP.
They're not totally useless. My daughters both fit back there somewhat comfortably for short(ish) trips but they are under 5' tall so... Ehh, I just need a daily driver to be fun when I have a chance to turn it up. All of the well accepted good commuters are boring, really boring. When I got this car I was doing 56 miles each way in and out of downtown NYC and it was perfect. Would I make the same choice again? Yup. It definitely misses on most practicality points but it's efficient and an absolute hoot to drive when you get a chance to play and as a car to go for a weekend ride with the wife it's great.

FWIW if I was the OP I'd keep the Taco and get a fun commuter rig. I've needed the Durango we got so may times in the last 3 years and not just because my car is so small, sometimes you just need a big rig or the weather is so rotten that you want it. I could see getting something small and awd but I just don't think I could ever get another fwd understeer disaster.

Haven’t seen a single reference to what I commute in. Basically a Prius that handles oddly well and is much more well appointed. CT200h Fsport. I get over 40mpg, 4 door, hatch, awesome seats, good tech.

Anyone who things 18mpg is acceptable for a moderate to long commute is a fucking knob.
Yes, I am aware that a lot of America does this. They are fucking knobs.
    i don't want two cars

second, living in snow country makes AWD high clearance a must. i don't want to have to snow blow the drive way just to get to work. The drive way is a hundred yards long and having a long commute is a pain in the ass after spending an hour clearing the drive way

I have a few friends that firmly advocate buying salvage titled cars with insure them with fairly low (near minimum) coverage. One is an economist and runs stats for a living at a university. By the numbers, it has worked out well for the families for decades.

Obviously he runs stats and doesn't mind riding around in a piece of shit. About 90% of the salvage title cars I see are pieces of shit. Baling wire and twine hold most of them together. When I sold cars I had a few customers that did this on a regular basis, they'd come in and look at our cars, then go buy a salvage title car. They'd then come in to show us the "bargain" they got on their new car. Always blissfully unaware they were driving a piece of shit. I may not know a lot, but I know a piece of shit car when I see one.

True enough. The stats prof/researcher. Her and her man drove Prius and subi. Both seemed ok to me. No wire involved. The time they lived near me, they put maybe 30-50k on each car.

I'm currently driving about ~1,000 miles a month (sometimes more) and getting reimbursed @ $0.54 / mile.

Just today found a 2005 Prius with only 35,000 miles (and totally impeccable) and bought it for $7k

I'm gonna drive the shit outta this car and cash flow!

Cheap wheels, I think I'm looking pretty good here - 00 crown Vic lx, one owner 73k miles. Yeah I know , not a sipper but who cares, I paid $400 bux. Only thing I'm missing is the push bar to knock hybrids out of my way....Click image for larger version.

    First new car I sold.

RX330 and RX350 make for good commuters.
