What grease to use for G3 ions?

I'm having an issue with the heel piece stuck in tour mode when it's cold.
I assume there is something icing up.

I sprayed silicon on the plastic pieces, limited success.

There was no grease on the turret, is it supposed to be dry inside?

    What grease should I use?

I saw some G3 binding grease at skimo, but I would rather not spend $30 for it.

    Thanks.

Campsaver sometimes has the $$$ G3 grease for 20% off with a coupon code. It lasts quite a while, I use it on all bindings and still have half a tub left.

Yes, the turret post should be lubed.

Dynafit/G3 grease, in fact all binding grease, is a PG75 grease (which is designed for plastic to plastic and plastic to metal components) which you can source from many industrial suppliers. The most common branded PG75 grease is Molykote.

The only difficulty is getting it in a small enough quantity as the smallest size available from the industrial supplier I used in the UK was a 1kg/2.2lb tin.

Spend the $30. Use on all your bindings.

So I have a tube of Phil a Wood grease - nice stuff made for bike bearings. I googled a bit and there's no mention of PG75. How bad would I be screwing up if I used that? Am I gonna die?

there's an old post (2010) on Wild Snow https://www.wildsnow.com/2774/dynafi...g-lubrication/ which suggests Dynafit used Molykote EM-30L as their grease back then and has a G3 guy suggesting it's not much different from their stuff; you can buy Molykote EM-30L repackaged by sellers on eBay/wherever for <$10.

It is one of the 80 things a man should own before they die apparently

the experts at Esquire magazine suggest it's not fancy and modern and smells like old dinosaurs, but said nothing about suitability for ski bindings.

I saw that when I was googling. Amazingly, I am pretty nearly a man - the only two things I didn't have something close for were the $1k hidden in my house and a money clip.

Try to pack grease into the gap between the heel post and the black housing that holds the brake arm. A ~5mm space opens up there when you put the heel in climb mode, which can fill with snow/ice when skinning and prevents the heel post from returning forward to ski position. If it's really greasy in the gap, it's harder for a chunk of ice to build up and lock the heel back. (Can't remember, you might be able to work in some grease from the underside of the baseplate too, into the gap in front of the post foot.)

Ordered some grease, will see how it works out. Annoying when it ices up, really hard to put in ski mode.

On the positive side, figured out how to put in my Lange freetours 130 after a night in the tent, when they are frozen solid.

10 minutes when a hot water bottle inside the shell (liner removed) and they are really easy to get on.

I was worried about this and I tried a number of things, including body warmer pouches, thought of sleeping with the shells in the sleeping bag!!!???.

The other thing that helps a lot is using silk socks, two pairs to take up volume.

Just a thought. When the ions are turned into tour mode, they can be pushed down toward the ski to lock them in the rotated position(first step on the way up usually locks them from rotating without you even noticing). It gets rid of the sometimes annoying habit of the binding rotating back to ski mode and locking the heel on the way up. It’s only 1 or 2 mm down at the most. Try pulling up on the turret before rotating back into ski mode, it might help. Otherwise, use bacon grease. Then if you get stranded you can take your bindings apart and last a day or 2 longer with all the extra calories hidden in there.

I don't know squat about G3 ion bindings, but I have used spray lithium on tele bindings to good effect. Cheap and gets in crevices.

Think that's a new feature, not sure which season they made the change. Maybe winter 2017?

Video says 2018, but thought it happened earlier.

Phil Wood is some of the best grease you can buy for any condition. It is actually re=packaged Aviation grade grease for control surface actuators. It is good from -60F to 140F (i think,, +/-10degrees, iirc) From the coldest temps at 40k feet to baking on a runway in 120F in the sunny middle East.

Good to know on temp ranges.

I often wonder for what can't I or shouldn't I use Phil Wood's grease? Same for Tenacious oil. It is always the go to lubes unless I know specifically something else is required/recommended. Of many uses, no squeaky hinges thanks to Phil.

Be careful that the grease does not damage plastic.

You read the description and the intended use, or ask the manufacturer.

Personally, I use the same grease that dynafit or G3 uses.

    Just bought some.

Absolutely make sure any grease you use is plastic-safe, most isn't. Just like bike chain guides that crack if you use a petroleum-based chain lube.

Also don't use Loc-Tite for insert screws, it causes some plastic baseplates to crack. Use Vibra-Tite instead.
