I think I'd go with chocolate or coffee ice cream. The cocoa porter I had at the brewery in Watkins Glen a few months ago would be better with vanilla.

Ask and ye shall receive. It’s a pretty cool place. the brewery and tasting room are in old buildings that have been repurposed. I assume they used to be brick factories because that’s what the town was known for historically.

That looks awesome, Thanks for sharing the pics! I love seeing other breweries layouts.

Looks like they have a 15 barrel system?

Those old brick buildings just scream brewery.

Love the shot of your sea kayak too!

Thanks. It’s from last summer. I was paddling around Haverstraw bay in the Hudson.

This thread needs a revival. It's not all about IPA

Stopped in at a local brewery this weekend and they had one of my favorites on tab, Electrostatic Ale. A french farmhouse ale with a lot of spicy notes. 10.6%. Awesome.

Good thread bump. How's Lightning Brewery overall? My mom and dad live near Poway and are always interested in finding good breweries. They'd been going to Second Chance a lot, but apparently my dad doesn't like the music they play there.

I like it. Small place, and it's out of the way up by Costco so it isn't a destination brewery. Beers are all pretty solid. My favorites are the Electrostatic and another strong ale Old Tempestuous Ale, but their basic beers like their lager, pilsner and hefeweizen are all excellent as well. I normally won't have those at other breweries but usually do when I'm at Lightning. For many years the owner refused to brew IPAs. He finally gave in, and those are decent, but I would go to other places if that's what I was looking for.

My mom's an IPA fan, my dad is more of a malty beer lover. I'll have to tell 'em to check it out sometime.

Sounds like there should be something for everyone.

If they are near Poway there is tons to check out nearby, esp Mira Mesa. A bit further away check out Lost Abbey/Port Brewing if they haven't already. And further south in Clairemont, Societe is a favorite, as is a new brewery Hopnonymous. Both of those lean more to IPAs but have other good stuff as well.

    A couple recent beers

    Staple. In cans from costco

One of my all time favorites. Now that Ballast Pt is a craft brewery again I can indulge. This one sat aging for a couple years.

Shelter In Place Series: Reverb Red
Alibi Ale Works, Inclind Village, Nevada

I am an unabashed, unapologetic, full-on IPA guy.
Yet, during this whole Shelter-in-Place pandemic action, I have been getting tired of the IPAs, mostly because I made a conscious effort to only purchase, drink, and support local breweries, but given their limited sales (bars not being allowed to open), their output has been stimied. So, after a couple of months, I was starting to drink the same IPAs over and over and decided to branch out a wee bit.

I am generally not a huge fan of malty beers, but this brewery is owned by a buddy of mine, I enjoy the IPAs and Pale Ales they produce, and I wished to support them during quarantine, so I purchased a 4er of their Red Ale.
Stamped on the bottom of the can were the words "Malt Bomb," which is a pretty good description of this brew. I would not normally gravitate towards this kind of beer, but I must say that is was pretty refreshing back in June when I buried it in the snow and enjoyed it after an evening of skiing a swatch of snow in my neighborhood.
It proved equally tasty and refreshing on subsequent drinkings, especially if it was ice cold and my pint glass was chilled and I drank it with food.

Shelter In Place Series: Motueka IPL
Alibi Ale Works. Incline Village, NV

While certainly not the most robust IPL I've had, this is a crisp, clean session beer, best served as cold as possible. A little light in flavor for my palate, it did lend itself well when served with food, particularly spicy food.

Defiant Brewery Muddy Creek. It’s been one of my favorites for years. Not too heavy, not too sweet, not too hoppy... just a nice medium bodied amber with maybe some hints of red fruit or maybe a suggestion of orange flavor on the palate but mainly just a nice beer flavored beer. I guess it’s got a bit of a short finish but hey, nobody’s perfect.
