If someone finds the tail washing out they need to ski faster and stop tail gunning through turns. The fast you go the more alive it gets. You can really feel the ski want to excellerate through turns. Much more playful than a Legend Factory; likely due to more tail rocker. Very damp. Anyone can ski this, but only those who are willing to commit to it will really enjoy it.
    The Proto
Glad you're stoked on The Proto. Maybe I didn't ski the Proto "right" or fast enough, but I feel like I didn't discover any real strengths of this ski within only 2 hours of ski testing---I didn't "get it".

I'm not challenging XavierD's review here---I'm neither strongly for nor against this ski---but I might as well add another data point for this rarely reviewed ski, by just pasting my notes that I wrote right after skiing it for only 2 hours:

Dynastar Proto118 189cm: Not impressed. A rocker tail ski that is stiff the whole way tip to tail. Like they merely slapped a rocker taper tail on their trad charger designs. I felt occasional moments when it felt like low rotational stability. Meh, nothing desirable about this ski, but not so terrible. So many better skis out there in this category. No metal, graphic says 3.5 drill bit. They tried to make a funshape serious, but failed IMO. We’ll see what Permin does with it.

    ...that's all I got.

Hmm, it felt like a trad charger ski with a easy to release tail. I really liked it. Reminded me of the LP105/Big Dump in a more modern shape.

5 days on these beasts now. They haul.
Surprisingly, they’ve been excellent in steep, narrow chutes with variable snow.

The Proto just got named as one of Powder Mag's skis of the year:

I think the review from Hansen is pretty much spot on, although the core is poplar not paulownia. Typo in the catalog.

Jesus, for the number of times he said fast, aggressive, straight, etc, that tester was making a shit ton of turns. I didn't get a chance to ski it, but LVS didn't have any trouble turning the Proto at Big Sky.

    Also, cool outfit bro.

The interesting thing about the niche they mention is that anyone who is interested in this ski will know exactly what it does. The need for anyone giving a video review is kind of moot. I think that's why he was struggling to find the words.

My thoughts exactly... For such a bad ass big mountain ski as described I am surprised by the 24m radius... And he was making a shit ton of quick turns and never really let them run...

Regardless, so nice to see them deviate from the Cham shitless line up... I miss the Dynastar of old and it looks like they are trying to make a come back...

It's not that burly, it skis more like a 186 Billygoat than a 191. Stiffer throughout, feels racey on hardsnow. Tip and tail are stiff like old school legend pros. I like them a lot and will probably spend the entire season convincing myself I like them more than 191 Billygoats.

    The Dynastar Thread

Rx is the metal free lovechild of the BG and LP105. Not quite, but if you stretch a little you could call it that.

I’m messing up your dynastar club here, I need to exit before I get beat up

    I would agree.

I'd say the lp105 and something like bentchetler would be the most accurate description of the proto.

While it doesn’t require you to go fast, it defiantly skis better the faster you go and prefers open areas. Again, skied best at -1cm or -2cm.

I wouldn’t let the 24m turn radius deceive you. It likes big turns similar to the 32m 193 bodacious I used to ski, but handles rough snow and transitions better. Doesn’t get bounced around as much.

More racy and carvy then a billy goat and doesn’t float as well.

On paper I wouldn't expect these two skis to be compared to each other. How do they compare?

Really? They're both long radiuses, tapered, tip/tail rockered, directional pow skis with a backbone that do well in coastal snow with a waist width around 118 mm underfoot. I think they are really similar honestly. Same type of skier would buy them.

I'm i the only one who thought the lp 105 was a fucking noodle??! I asked the og root beer float and it was a mix between the lp115 and a 186 pro maybe..

Leaventhworth-- I was asking how they compare being as you skied them both. I've skied neither. I've always thought the BG was a god in the forest with its RES, and this new proto sounds like the near opposite to that.

Not trying to be confrontational, genuinely curious.

Yeah, I sounded like a dipshit there.

I got 20ish days on my Billygoats and 2 days on the Proto. Skied the Billygoat at Alpental, Stevens pass, and Mission Ridge. Skied the Proto at Big Sky and Mission Ridge.

My Billygoats are 191s, I believe the last year before they went 189.

They are similar. Billygoat is more loose. Proto is better on mixed snow. Billygoat has softer tip and tail with a round flex. Proto is a more even, stiff flex.

(My vintage) Billygoat feels more wandery and vague on groomers. Proto feels like it has a race ski heritage. Much better grip. That said, you won't mistake either for a carving ski. But you can lay the Proto over earlier and stay on edge longer.

Both are able to drift easily. Both pivot and slash easy. Both like shins forward but neutral stance. Modern upright boots are best. Billygoat is more fun in trees, has a playful streak. Proto feels more business oriented. Still fun but not as lively.

I skied both in weird windfunk. Typical mission ridge, 2" of firm breakable wind crust with low density powder underneath. They both keep the tips above and are very predictable. The stiffer flex of the Proto cuts through that stuff, whereas the BG sort of porpoises to the surface.

Have not skied the proto in deep pow. The Billygoat is an awesome higher density deep pow ski.

In low density boot top powder I prefer the proto, the stiffer flex is more predictable. I feel the soft tip of the Billygoat hunts for the surface and sinks and it's kind of annoying.

So basically I don't think you could go wrong with either. Similar skis, similar purpose.

I wonder how the new Wren 114 compares to the Proto?

Nothing to add, really. Just a bit of S Hemi stoke.
