Insults and "Community"

What it does say about someone if you look at, let's say, their last 10 posts on TGR, and 5 or 6 of them are direct (and not at all clever) insults?

As I've admitted before, I have considerable experience in internet assholery, but there are a number of folks who like to think they are part of the "TGR Community" for whom their primary method of interacting with the "community" is insulting its other members.

Honest question: is that what you all want from "community members?" And if not, what have you done about it?

Danno, you I can say has honestly tried to make a positive difference, and often do so in a reasonable way.

But I think you're probably an exception. Lots of other folks spend an inordinate percentage of their posts insulting other members of the community, then they act very proud of the results that are achieved. If that's consistent with what the "TGR Community" is all about, then that's fine, I'm just wondering how many of you really think that actually IS what hte TGR Community should be about.

13 years ago this board was more like a ski magazine, it was ski pics and ski stories and ski town life... and the harshness was mainly to sort of keep the interlopers out. Then we had such a flood of interlopers (eat a 55 gallon drum of dicks Rob Story) and exodus of the old guard, that the whole character of the thing shifted.
I understand the exodus...this whole thing isn't what it used to be.
Now I'm mainly here because I live and work far from ski culture, and I miss bullshitting with skiers; even if it's not a ski-related topic...

It's both. It's complex, situational, subjective, and individual.

Deep down, there's a handful of folks here who seem genuinely interesting, and there's a fair number that I think are after something other than just a chance to be a dick. And I'm also really curious about virtual social dynamics. I was previously engaged in public chastisement as an experiment run amok. I've quit that, which doesn't mean I won't respond to an asshole that is worth the effort, and am now just curious about what the folks here think they are getting from it, and what makes it worthwhile to them.
