He was America's biggest badass mountaineering stud of all time, with hundreds of first ascents. His 3-volume Cascade Alpine Guide was the definitive guide to climbing routes in the WA and southern BC Cascades. RIP Fred. You had a damn fine run.

a legend defined. rip
RIP Fred,
You lived your life right to the hilt, inspiring generations in your wake.
In your memory I will post this fitting HST quote:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow!
Rest in peace, Fred, you were one of a kind.
Aw shit. I was wondering about him just a month ago. He was so awesome.
When I saw this thread I was going to post that "will belay for food" pic, but I'm not surprised it's already up.
RIP.
what did he choke on a free appy at a walmart food display?
But seriuosly 94 is a damn good run

Lee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know
Bad ass till the end. RIP.
The most prolific climber of all time and that might not ever be challenged. Seriously, he went for about 3/4 of a century, non stop. Still waiting to watch the movie.
Never knew about him until I read the quote about him stealing your women and stealing your route...ultimate dirtbag. RIP.
RIP
A classic!
Climb on, you crazy diamond. Rip Mr. Beckey

I'm not a climber but always looked up to Fred. He did life right . Complete legend.
Thanks Fred
The real deal, RIP.
Last night I had a dream about our climb of Mt. Despair in the mid-1990's. Despair was Fred's earliest first ascent, in 1939 when he was 16. One of his climbing partners, Lloyd Anderson, had started REI in his West Seattle home a year before. In the dream we were hanging out with Fred on the summit, then my party started our descent, leaving Fred at the summit. Then I awoke. Eerie shit.

A dogged explorer of the high places!
RIP Mr. Beckey
haha
Was Fred within earshot? Did he flash his typical smirk?
I had the opportunity to “ski powder” with Fred and eat lunch with him in the lodge after that run. I was telling him how scared I was when I had climbed one of his routes the previous summer. He said “well, that’s as good of a reason as any I guess, I think I climbed it to impress a girl.” RIP Fred.
