Being informed is part of the job.

BTW, I spoke with Patrol the other day regarding the new boundary line. Patrol has made no changes to how the manage the resort. They bomb just the ridge line out past the end of Palisades, and there is no regular patrol or sweep past Jeff's Line. And they have always performed rescues in that zone, as needed. I suggested they replace the old boundary signs that were removed last season with a new one stating that there was no patrol or sweep 'past this point'. One of them joked that Vail would probably approve more signs. They were informed, and helpful.

Security has no place managing the lift corral. Let the lifties do that. Security should stick to what they are trained to do - direct traffic. EDIT TO ADD: And rifle through your ski pack when you are enjoying closing day with your 4 year old.

Are you being intentionally dense or did you miss the part where I said there wasn’t a single other person near the lift?

NOAA remote sensor at the base of Alpine Meadows is reporting a consolidated base depth increase of 20" over the course of 30 hours.

If you're security chances are you aren't making enough to support yourself let alone your family in a ski town and you get to stand there all day watching the rich folks do stupid shit (not talking about you J). Like being a doorman at Trump Tower. Most of the security guys I've seen don't look like skiers. The job must suck. And on top of that some asshole complains about people using the ski school line and the supervisor tells you to stop them if you want to keep your shit job.

Reminds me of the ticket I got from a VA cop for doing a California stop on the grounds of the Tucson VA at 2AM with not a moving car within 2 miles. Guy must have been waiting there for some hapless resident to go through the stop sign. Federal offense apparently. I paid the ticket.

Interesting place the Tucson VA. Looks like a desert resort surrounded by native vegetation--Saguaro, ocotillo, cholla, etc. Old vets would show up late fall with some bullshit complaint and get admitted for the winter--hard to get them out of there once they're in. Probably they've tightened things up by now.

Note the source: NOAA/NWS. I know that the Alpine number is consistent with the remote readings, and presumably not based on the marketing department's wishes.

^^^ That. Post-frontal cold core showers are just that--showery. So not a unified front and can favor some places more than others. Not surprising that those places often happen to be high points on the crest.

If it was Squaw directly, I'd be suspicious too.

Yeah. Took four laps near rose this morning, face shots every time, at least waist deep in areas that were blown in. Buddy called tits deep, and he's like 6'2. Go get it

I found broken glass, hourglass, proletariat, and the plug to be okay. It was hard to see where I was going. Lots of snow in my face. And I felt out of shape. Like, I couldn’t breathe. It felt like there were crystals in my lungs.

Alpine definitely skied like there was a foot of new snow this morning...for at least an hour until it was pretty well compacted. Watching the radar last night, there was a band of showers that set up in a line from west Donner Lake along Highway 89 right about to Twin Peaks that basically stalled out and dropped a lot of light fluff overnight. On the other side of Truckee we had 1.5 inches in the driveway.

At Squaw today it was deep enough to cover the bumps and make new ones.

I successfully got on Far East through ski school line this morning with out being chastised.

Dad and about 9-10 year old son came off Granite and tried to use the patrol gate on Sibo, which had a long line. Dad felt going all the way back to the end of the line would be too much work, They were sent to the back of the line by a strict young lady lift op. Brava.

My other lift op experience today--long singles line on Sibo. When I make it to the head of the line I tell the lift op the singles line is slow. He immediately tells the group of six waiting to go next to hold on and let 6 singles go. First time in my life that ever worked. Unfortunately the guy on the far side doesn't hear. As I go to the loading area I go in front of him, not realizing I'm in the way of the chair coming for the people in front of us. An alert lift op hit the brakes and I and the woman who was following me (always a bad idea) managed to get out of the way. No one even hooted or laughed at us. I'm trying to figure out what I did to get good karma but I'm coming up empty.

Skiing was great today despite the crowds (lots all filled). I'm trying not to look at the forecast.

Sugar Bowl definitely got more than another 6 inches as reported in that graphic up thread. Was probably closer to the 10 at Alpine. Which makes sense being on the crest and relatively nearby. Hell, we got another 6 inches last night at 6400 feet in Tahoe Donner.

In general I'm not that skeptical of Squawlpine snow reports... unlike Northstar.

Another fun morning at Rose today. Rose must have picked up some lake effect last night, as this morning it was deep enough that all tracks from Thursday were covered. The Zephyr trees had 6-8 of new on top of what fell earlier and made for some fun turns.

Definitely still low tide conditions out there. Know your line, and ski smart. Saw too many people charging, followed by the inevitable dry dock to pre release.

Took a little side country trip out to Hank's/Manzo's and the snow was sweet. Pushing a foot deep down the center of the bowl. The traverse back into the resort, not so sweet. Super bony and with the light snow you went to the bottom and reefed. I like the warning under the stop sign. How many people have found that out the hard way.

Was hoping that the Chutes might go today. No luck. They look pretty skiable to me. Rumor was maybe in a couple days? With the weather forecast I saw of 60 deg in Reno coming up it might be mank by then.

Alpine was fantastic yesterday, nice high density wind affected snow. Low visibility but the crowds were all gone by 11:30. High Yellow face and gully were the best spots, fresh in the morning and great wind buff in the afternoon. Today I had a late start but all upper squaw was great. Lighter, colder less wind today, another foot for sure. The best was Emigrant, funnel and back side to break it out were the spots. Headwall face, N. Bowl, Slot to CII were all excellent. FYI, they say KT will open at 8:30 tomorrow, obviously some of the terrain will be closed. They say they are working on Headwall and will have that open later in the day or Sunday. Looks Good!

Daaamn goat. Thanks for the tip on Tucson VA. Sounds like a nice hook up for a bit of winter break on occasion. 'My skins are tired and I need a body worker for my warrior self'. I'm in.

KW was rad the last 2 days. We got the over on Thursday and under for today (only a 3" refresh) but I was out in West Shore all day so it didn't matter, you just had to work for it compared to yesterday. Props to the 2 guys in full BC gear at the top of Wagon Wheel peak who wouldn't come out there with me. Hope Fawn ridge was fun! . Snow was stable, I skied Diagnol chute which still has nice little mandatory in the choke. Main street gave up the best turns of the day out there for me. Califoria chute got ski'd. Sure is nice to have winter for a couple days!

with no base to speak of on a lot of KT I'll let you young folks find the rocks. Seems strange HW hasn't been running--must be mechanical.

There was a bunch of stuff off Red dog that was tracked up that seemed to have little to no base.

I was miffed we missed Wildcard opening today.
(Never skied it, but looks interesting on trail map).
Car bollox meant we only got out yesterday afternoon, and for a few runs at the end of today.

Anyway, a 'troller on Thursday said the Chutes could open now, but lift onload is so low, they need more snow for the trail to it.
Plus "it's a wetland down there".
    *But*
...they were sending a Cat in today.
I think to see if it's weight would be supported, and to build up a platform under the onload.
    Allegedly...

Yep, heard the same thing that the loading ramp area is to thin to open. There is a ton of willows growing in that riparian area also that make poke up thru the snow on shallow years making access to the bottom shack difficult. Nightmare and Millertime do look very choice right now. I skied Outlaw today just as the closure was being pulled. Skied right along the Chutes rope line. It skied well, but I was tentative the first time thru not knowing what was lurking just under the snow. The traverse out over the bushes was bony. I'm back up there first thing tomorrow (Saturday) as my boy has Falcons program. I'm skiing solo til his lunch break at noon. Anyone out hit me up. Predicting a busy (crowded) day with the new snow.
