Any of you Volvo heads have a strong opinion on what to look for on a 2005 xc70 with the 2.5 and a bunch of miles on it? I'm comfortable with a little bit of wrenching, but my hope is for a quasi-reliable beater for cheap.

See if they have any service records, especially if they have had the tranny serviced, timing belt/water pump and pay for a inspection at a Volvo shop. Tons of xc70's out there for cheap but they can eat you alive after 150K miles if they haven't stayed on top of service. Oil trap/PCV system, transmission, suspension etc. Good thing is if you're handy with a set of tools and time you can get a nice car for half the price of a rattle trap Subaru as long as you're willing to fix a few things.

Yeah. The automatic transmission issues circa 2002 scare me. They were supposedly fixed by 2005, but I don't know for sure.

I've got a 2011 Outback, and we are getting to the point where I'm considering dumping it. Timing belt is coming due soon, and it's probably due for new suspension bits. Probably a new clutch within the next year or two as well. To take care of this stuff, I will probably take out my metric wrenches and do it myself. The timing belt job would be a new one for me, but I'm comfortable swapping shocks and struts or brakes.

Its tempting because the asking price on the Volvo is only $1,500.00 and I would hope to sell my Outback for $8,000.00 or so. If I'm turning wrenches to keep it running, it would be nice to at least save some money.

I have sold a $1,500 Volvo with 240k miles on it. The transmission was going to shit the bed any day. Seemed fine, but I had a bad feeling. I am honestly not sure if Volvo ever has had a problem free AT, hence why my current car has a MT.

Friend recently recommended I check out 3-4 year old XC70 T6 options to replace my Outback.
Any input would help since I don't know shit about Volvos.

Fucking tired of Subarus after 4 outbacks and want to get rid of this one before the head gasket or CVT tranny shit the bed.
Need a wagon. Need AWD. Need to be able to do a shit ton of miles at 85mph with a box on top and bikes on the back. Need significantly more power than the outback (hahahahaha).
What do all the numbers mean? What years were bad/good? How much room is in the back of the little wagons like the xc60?

edit: What's the T6? Seems like some sites show it as a supercharged 4cyl and some show it as a 6cyl.

The T6, as it pertains to the 2011-16 XC70 is a transverse mounted turbocharged 3.0L short inline 6 cylinder. 300 HP and 320 pound-ft torque.

As for "which years", the newest you can afford.

It's a 2015, and I've owned it for just shy of a year. There are a few little things that I could pick apart, but overall it is a really nice car. That's my wife's Outback parked behind it, and her old Outback was a 2002. The interior space - and the shape of that space - is better than both of those cars, and much better than the vw/audis that I looked at. I test drove the V60 wagon as well, and the sloped roofline really kills the doggie headroom. Way more road noise too.

As everyone says, the seats are comfy, and it has a fairly plush ride - yet if you're a smooth driver it handles twisty roads quite well without much body roll. The engine revs smoothly, and the acceleration will put a smile on your face. And even with all that power, the mileage is the same as the Subaru.

I’ve had a 09 XC70 T6 for 6 months, a 08 V50 T5 before that. Love the 70, also loved the 50. Went for the 09 because was the next newest body, was pre-nav/other dash tech/etc. (which I like) and drives awesome. Very quick in the mountains, really comfortable, lots of room, pop-up booster seats in the back for the kids. Weirdly it has Bluetooth for voice calls but not music. Gas mileage bad though. 24 mpg on highway, 18 in mixed driving (with a roof rack and box).

From the opinion of the Volvo community, would it be worth spending $3k to get a CarMax extended warranty? I think it gives you an extra 5 years and out to like 125k miles.

XC60 will most likely feel smaller. Definitely in the trunk. For what you’re probably paying, $3K seems worthwhile to me depending on what’s included. I just had the anti-skid unit replaced in my wife’s ‘12 XC90 and it was $750.

How long will the $3k warranty cover you, like 3 years? If yes with a low deductible, it may be a good idea. I purchased the extended warranty when I bought my car new for about $2k and never really used it. At 110k miles the awd went and that was almost $3k to fix.

5 years from purchase? That sounds ok, especially for as expensive as Volvo repairs could be, BUUUUUT what's the mileage? If the car's already over 50K miles, then I dunno depending on how much you drive you car. Our '08 XC70 has about 160K and it's been very much trouble free. Fantastic car. However, we're terrified that if the transmission ever goes (a very realistic probability for this model), the car's pretty much done for since it would cost more to fix than the vehicle's even worth now.

We've been very happy with it as a family car with 2 big dogs and 2 children. Plenty of room for us and we've done multiple cross-country treks with it. Very doable with the addition of a roof box. Reason it maybe feels smaller than the Outback is the Volvo's panels, doors, insulation, etc. are THICC compared to the tin can that the Outback is. Seriously. Just compare the noise and feel when you close the doors. That satisfying "thunk" you get from a big European vehicle. When the door's open, you'll see just how massive it's depth actually is. There's a reason these cars are so safe. They're heavy, built like tanks, and packed to the gills with safety features. Not that Subarus are bad, but Volvo definitely takes the lead in that regard. Pretty much over EVERY manufacturer in fact. Downside is they're seriously heavy vehicles so the mpg is not good, which is my biggest complaint about mine. That and it's a total snoozefest to drive. It makes up for it though by actually being fun to drive in snow since you can sling it around like a maniac and it just goes wherever you point it. It's AWD and TC are most excellent.

Agree with all of above. Volvo feels like a luxury car compared with the rattley Outback.
Drove an XC60 and liked it a lot more. Front and back seats more roomy.

The thing about that is what it's worth to you rather than resale value. And fwiw that resale value is near 0 with a bad transmission... I had a C30 for a while, until someone t-boned me and totaled it, and compared to every other small car and even most medium sized cars out there there was nothing that could compare to how solid that car felt and sounded. If it didn't have that silly waterfall with everything integrated into it to control the car I'd get another one but if that goes bad you can't do anything with climate control and a bunch of other critical functions and with the newest ones being 6 years old now it's about time for the electronics to be having problems.

I ended up with a CPO 2015.5 XC60 T6. The CPO gives us about 18 months of bumper to bumper warranty (5 years from original date of purchase). We got another 3 years added to that for $3,100. It’s a bit steep, but similar to the CarMax deal. Kicker with Volvo is, new warranty has unlimited miles. It actually says 999,999 miles on the paperwork. I expect to be pushing 160k miles when it runs out.

That is a great deal, as most of my issues were between 90k and 110k miles. Once all of the initial failures were fixed, my car with 188k on it runs great. I did just drop $1k for some fucking electronic control module that was annoying and then $2k for a new clutch, alternator and some other maintenance items, but that is way better than a car payment and I love my V70R.
Oddly, after the new clutch install my gas mileage improved by 1.5 mpg on a 800 mile round trip to Mammoth. Is that possible or was it just a fluke?

Having trouble with roof rack noise. Installed the OEM (rebranded previous generation Thule) Volvo crossbars on the flush rails. Pretty noisy until I added my Skybox and now it’s like driving in a tornado.
