    Overrated

As a New Englander, I feel that Lobster is completely overrated by most people.

Personally I enjoy lobster, but many locals and tourists act as though it's the holy grail of food...as they drown it in butter or get in a roll covered in mayo. Eat it as it is and boil it on seawater, then tell me you still think it's the best meal ever. Again,, I like 'the bug' bottom feeder as is, but there are many better options out there.

It's a "hey, look at me, I'm eating lobster! It's what you do in NE and elsewhere to show how much $$$ you'll waste on a meal.

So...what about the hype of that fight...yeah, another thing overrated.

Consider the competition, blue crab, Dungeness crab, snow/king crab, langoustines, crayfish.

Cook them all at once, each optimally, then compare with bites of duck, buffalo and new York strip on hand with decent wines.

    Then decide.

    Great reason for a party.

You omitted sushi from that list.

To paraphrase the great Duke Ellington, if it tastes good, it is good. But, yeah, I can't recall the last time I paid the big $$ for lobstah.

    Noted.

I actually did the lobster/blue crab/Dungeness/king crab comp a few years ago. I think freshness must count since the dungeness and king crab won, at least on my twisted palate.

Anyway. I do luv me some lobster. When I lived I Cambridge and made forays up to Maine to score lobster and corn I do savor some remembrances of evenings past indulging in that fine repast.

I've been pondering this for a full 10 minutes. For my palate, sashimi FTW, followed by a properly prepared dry aged NY strip. Lobstah, king crab, dungeness crab and lamb shank tied for 3rd.

But when Buster hosts his taste test party, I'll eat 'em all.

Taste is only a part of the experience of dining. Lobster. The tail meat has just the right firmness. Lobster tail makes butter taste delicious and fills the mouth. Claws are a bit more lobster tasting and the leg meat is lobster soda through a straw. The tomalley is like a bite of the Atlantic. I've had dungeness a few times but for the price, meh. OTOH, the crab we caught, cooked and ate by the shore while we camped was very, very, tasty.

Lobster does have the rep of being something special all across the country. When Nalgene ran a sales incentive contest for the lab wear reps they opted for one with the top prize being a complete New England lobster dinner for 12. Corn, rolls, clams and soup too. FedEx next day air. A guy in Michigan won as I recall.

I'm lazy. I just eat the tails, if someone else is paying for it. But it's hard to beat nice fresh scallops--and easy to find some not so fresh.
I suppose we all know that lobster used to be what they fed prisoners and servants.

The irony of wooley posting about the texture of lobster with his new Tom Joad avatar did not escape me

Yeah, scallops and prosciutto are my current go to when pursuing gourmando nova of the melding of the seafood cosmos with the pork product cosmos.

Then there's scallops fried in duck fat, melding the bacon of the bird world with that delicasea.

I mean, lobster and lobster rolls are good but I'm not choosing them every meal. Prefer claws over tails.

Irony is that lobster was once considered as a food fit for only the pigs and the poor.

For the best deal on lobster, go to a New England supermarket when the supply is up. What the locals do.

Overrated - salmon. I think that has something to do with living in AK for years, where I got all I wanted and then some.

Kings, reds, silvers...with the exception of well done smoked salmon, maybe just tell me about what else you have.

for those of us land-locked in the middle of the country, fresh lobster is fantastic! A little butter, not overly buttered. I mean, we are used to a great piece of steak, and I love steak. But get us on the east coast and lobster and crab are what we eat. My kids love both. They are expensive dates. Hopefully when in the midwest you choose a fantastic steak, medium rare or less, and no steak sauce.

Exactly. Buying a live lobster in the Midwest is ridiculously expensive. Seafood here that is decent is really hard to find and not worth the money if found.

halibut ok fresh, but frozen overrated. I can agree on some salmon but a piece of wild king catching on fire from the oil on the grill is hard to beat.

Similar sentiment living in Seattle for 30 years, although I love a good salmon skin sushi roll.

Crustaceans: dungeness over lobster; always take a mollusk over a crustacean, however.

I like lobsters. They're cute. I also like octopods (smart little fuckers, curious and very personable).

    I won't eat either.

Last year I did a group buy for friends & neighbors, 100 sockeye from a guy down river for 9$ each for a pretty cheap source of protein, also got a halibut connection

Salmon, halibut, crab, lobster scallop ... its all good

I'm getting 5 dinners of salmon out of a 9$ fish so if something has a little freezer burn just cut it off

No, nothing like that. But you have to admit, they could probably give one hell of a hand job.
