I need to learn some basic Spanish.

I don't have the environment for Immersion. Any good apps? I just need need the basics. Is Duolingo the best app?

Duolingo is very good, but the Taco Bell menu should have you covered for starters

I like Duolingo. I would also try to listen to music and watch movies in Spanish. For the movies, start with English subtitles, then switch to Spanish subtitles, then finally to none. The accents on Mexican films will probably be easier for you than Spanish or Argentine films. If you can find Colombian/Venezualan/Peruvian films, those might even easier, but they don't have huge film industries.

Duolingo is great for pounding in vocab and getting a good handle on the basics but you won't learn to speak, you'll only learn to read. I recommend pairing duolingo with some private Skype lessons through italki and some conversations using an app like tandem. Also the Coffee Break Spanish podcast is great.

You have the environment for immersion, you just have to be creative.

    I've learned some by:
    1. Calling Verizon customer service and pressing #2
    2. Using the SAP button on the remote when watching my favorite shows
    3. Attending traffic court in various major cities--they like to get the Spanish people in and out first before the native English speakers.

When I'm feeling lazy my fallback is adding "o" to English words.

Just remember that any phrase which includes "su madre" is probably not a compliment

If you spend much time commuting, try something that you can listen to (phrases) and repeat, repeat, repeat to nail pronunciation/aural comprehension. "Learn Spanish in Your Car" e.g.

Fly down to Los Angeles, Mexico and hang out at any Home Depot. You can't help but pick it up quickly.

Yeah, and adding es puta won't help either.

Did you ever go with one of those industrious Latin law firms? Seems like they've got the system beat.

In my experience, the parking lot across from Amigo Depot is the go-to place for Spanish immersion lessons.

    And recreational drugs.

So angry that a city founded in 1781 as "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula" long before it was ever a part of the United States is a majority Hispanic city. Next you'll insist San Diego be renamed "Saint Jacob" and San Antonio "Saint Anthony."

Face it. You're a bigot, Viva. You need to get over this. You're the interloper there. "They" aren't.

Actually Tipp, I believe they just appropriated it from the Native Americans who lived there previously.

Either way, I'm glad it's just Los Angeles now. The El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula Dodgers or Lakers would be a mouthful.

Nuevo Yorko used to be Dutch, but so far they haven't made a concerted effort to come back to get it.

Well, that's a step up, I suppose. Years ago someone here called me racist because I used the word "dago" when referring to the god damn Goombahs. Imagine that!

I listened to Pimsleur while bike riding, driving - any free time - it's speaking only - not sure they have an app.

The fact that Viva found an upside down exclamation point to put in his post shows great respect for the Spanish language. Not indicative of bigotry IMO.
