A few years earlier but i would add Vanishing Point to that list. There’s another one I of same vane I can’t recall title too but will add when that neuron unclogs
I’d add Sugarland Express too but it’s a bit different
I think I recall Tarantino listing DM/CL on his list of influences
As I mentioned earlier, the first time I saw DM/CL was on late night television. I didn’t see the whole film, only about the last third or so.
When I was finally able to find it at a movie store, it was at Le Video in San Francisco.
This was way before DVD was the thing and the copy I rented was on VHS. Not only that, but it was a bootleg copy dubbed from a Japanese laser disc, so it had Japanese subtitles!
As for more similar films, I’d also recommend:
Easy Rider
Charlie Varrick
THE KILLER
Not to be confused with John Woo’s 1989 HK classic or David Fincher’s 2024 modern classic, this Korean guns-n-fisticuffs actioneer actually has more in common with the Taken franchise. But it’s 27x more stylish than those Liam Neeson films.
Drenched in neon, it’s teeming with slick fight sequences and solid action set pieces.
The story is pretty routine and there’s a bit too much soap operatic melodrama sprinkled throughout, but lead actor Jang Hyuk commands the screen and when the bullets start flying and bones get broken you quickly forget about the treacley bits.

Hmm, no mention of The Apprentice here yet (it's a rental on Prime; I got the DVD from the library)? I liked it, mostly. It's worth noting that, overall, it isn't an attack piece on Trump, though certainly he doesn't come across heroically. In fact, for at least the first half of the movie, Trump is portrayed sympathetically, as a young guy whose ambition is still struggling to emerge from unpolished dorkiness; kind of racist, sure, but he was raised by his dad to consider that as essential to being in New York real estate. He doesn't even show signs of being an awful person until about 2/3 of the way in, when he rapes his wife (which, in real life, was documented but recanted in exchange for a cash settlement).
Given that Trump's followers consider the various qualities that the movie shows Cohn instilling in young Donald as more virtues than anything else, it's far from clear that Republicans would object to the bulk of how this movie portrays their idol. Not even the rape scene should be problematic for them; Republicans mostly wouldn't consider what reportedly occurred to be rape, because she was his wife and he her patriarch.
The plastic surgery stuff towards the end, though, was overdone; close-ups of scalp surgery are a bit much. It seemed to be played as the final stage of DT's transformation into the Trump we now know and loathe, sort of like Darth Vader putting on his black helmet for the first time. But really, who cares? Lots of people get liposuction, and lots of people (including Joe Biden) have received elaborate treatments to avoid baldness. Granted, most of them don't end up looking like a ridiculous less friendly Liberace, but still... so what. This was a heavy-handed departure from what was otherwise a nuanced well done character study.
After a long hiatus from AMZ, we finally caved in. Mostly just for the Whole Foods discounts. Haha. Anyway, wife and I just blasted through Fallout and I gotta say. Skeptical as I initially was about such an adaptation from a video game series (that was excellent btw), they knocked it out of the park with this one. I'm old enough to remember playing Wasteland on PC (and my buddy's C64), and also played the original Fallout 1 & 2, then Fallout 3 on PS3. I think Fallout 2 was my fav. They captured a lot of the humor and overall fell from the games and did enough to captivate newer audiences such as my wife. I thought she was going to hate it, but ended up loving it. Looking forward to season 2!
I thought this was going to be cheesy but it actually ended up being very well done. Great surfing and an interesting look inside the life of young women trying to make it as pro surfers. I noticed it was produced by Reese Witherspoon's company. Damn these young women rip!Surf Girls Hawaii, a new Amazon 4 episode series, is pretty good. Basically a documentary about womans pro surfer season.
TURBO KID
I know that I’ve mentioned this flick before, but it’s so tasty and amazing it’s worth mentioning at least 9x more!

IDLEWILD
Not sure how or why I slept on this, but my recent enjoyment of Sinners got me thinking about this film.
I had signed up for the Starz trial to watch a couple of other things and when I saw this was also in their catalogue, I gave it a go.
It is a visually stunning film that makes me scratch my head as to why director/writer Brian Barber hasn’t done any other feature films to date.
The story is a bit simple and some of the acting and pacing can be clunky, but the look of the film is beyond cool and carries the proceedings along.
The cast is deep and the musical numbers are entertaining.
I am curious as to why it doesn’t get mentioned as an obvious influence on Sinners since both films definitely share some similar cinematic DNA.
But as its own thing, this Outkast vehicle is definitely worth a look.

DAMSEL
This post-modern revisionist Western relies on determined deadpan delivery and a satirical slant on masculinity and forced chivalry.
It’s deliberate pacing may be a challenge for some, but if you stick with it, the pay off is great.
Beautiful cinematography and an immersive score by Austin, TX combo The Octopus Project only help to elevate the proceedings.
THE WARRIORS WAY
One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes opined "Perfectly, thoroughly divisive, The Warrior's Way will either be delightful or unbearable, depending on your tolerance for surreal, shamelessly over the top collisions of eastern and western clichés."
I fall into the former camp in that I found the film, which I saw upon its initial release back in 2010, to be a mesmerizing pastiche of Westerns and Samurai films delivered with eye-popping visual flair.
Cheesy? For damn sure, but also exhilaratingly fun and campy.
Deep Cover An enjoyable dramedy caper
ESCAPE TO ATHENA
Featuring Telly Savalas as a brooding and terse Greek resistance fighter, Roger Moore doing a bad German accent, Elliot Gould cold lamping, plus Sonny Bono, Richard Roundtree, David Niven, and Stephanie Powers merely along for the ride (and sadly under utilized), this is one of those WWII ensemble joints following in the vein of The Guns of Navarone ,
The Great Escape , Kelly’s Heroes , The Dirty Dozen ,
and countless others.
Compared to the aforementioned, however, it is kind of a low-rent endeavor, though, seeming to be capitalizing on the marquee name ensemble films of that era, but also coming at a time when those kinds of films were waning in popularity.
While largely enjoyable, it’s also kinda lean and coulda used a little more meat and fat on the bones of the script.
That said, there is a bofo amazing motorcycle chase featured in the film that makes it worth the watch. It’s an Old School, practical chase with real motorcycles and harrowing camera work.
And while more often than not the cast never really gels, it is apparent that all involved seem to be enjoying themselves immensely, which counts for something and definitely adds to the watchability factor.
BETTER MAN
I saw this Robbie Williams biopic in the cinema and it is bonkers good.
Imagine Singing in the Rain crossed with Planet of the Apes…
I knew f$&k-all about Williams going into the movie, but he’s an entertaining rogue and his self oral history is told with snarky panache and glint-in-the-eye tongue-in-cheekiness.
This film is beyond entertaining and the coolest musical biopic I’ve seen (okay, it’s a close second to Kneecap).

Really enjoyed it. Innovative and very entertaining. Still think Back to Black is one of the best music biopics out there https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2126171...20to%2520black
