Tips for mounting a punching bag?

Like the title says, I need to mount a heavy bag, unsure on weight yet but between 70 and 100lb models.

Needs to go in an upstairs room - I doubt a wall mount is in order since the walls are "standard" 2x4 stud for interior walls, 2x6 exterior. do have access to the ceiling joists by going up in the attic, so I could do blocking up there to hold it up, but no access to any kind of truss/beam.etc, just standard 2x6 ceiling joists.

Right now, I'm planning on probably using blocking to tie 3 of the 2x6's together (from the attic), plus perhaps an MDF or similar "plate" on the room side big enough to bolt into those 3x joists. Then a "normal" swivel mount into the plate/center joist and a spring between bag and swivel.

Am I missing anything - seems straightforward, and I tend to overengineer, but??? Anyone have tips/advice/etc to make sure the noise/vibration doesn't transmit everywhere and make my family crazy or crack a bunch of drywall?

This is not at all what I was expecting when I clicked on this thread.

That said, try a stud finder and a 1/2 drill bit. Lacking that, an avy beacon, steel toe boot and a harbor freight chop saw should suffice.

Do yourself a favor and buy a stand. Not expensive. Much easier and better.

That sounds like a dark road I'm not sure I want to head down.

    I'll PM Rontele.

    Or DD.

That said, Ice is probably right given the mounting challenges.

Get a double end bag instead. More fun and easier to manage

I would hate a heavy bag upstairs.

This does not appear to have the same stress relief potential.

    Heavy bags aren't much fun

The double end bag "punches back"

There's no way the noise and vibration don't transmit throughout the house.

I had one in my man cave for 15 years, hung from the ceiling with a heavy eye bolt into the joist. Never had any problems. I found a speed bag was better for releasing stress and the ladies all want you show them how to do it. I found the heavy bag a chore.

I used to have one that I'd hang from a pull up bar in a doorway. Was good for punching but was difficult to kick.

Exactly. Part of the selling point is that brood of kiddos can hammer it as wanted.

That just mounted to normal joist?

If kids are gonna hit it that's fine. If pissed off-grown men are gonna hit it to let steam off, I'd go with the stand.

I'm considerate. The whole point of the thread is making it quieter so I don't disturb the neighbors when I beat the Ole punching bag.

A heavy bag mounted next to a wall like above is less than ideal if you actually want to hit it.

You must workout in *expensive* jeans. Am I doing something wrong if stands all look to be 150+?

Edit to add: answering myself, yes. $100 for a stand IF I can find in state.

Didn't peg you as into that sort of thing.

Anyway, this thread is about as definitive as any on TGR so based on collective wisdom I'm gonna ceiling mount, using the red one, and if it sucks try going to the stand I think.

    Thanks.

There's a good reason no martial arts/boxing gym has bags on stands.

I hung mine from a screw in hook on the center beam in the basement, which someone put a swing chair on and tore it out. So then I looped a section of heavy chain over the beam. That works. I thought this thread would be about dead hookers since DD failed to deliver.

OP- PM NW_SKIER. Seriously he's a pro a mounting heavy bags and get a muay thai bag. They are so much better than a traditional heavy bag.

Edit to add: I have a 150lb Outslayer bag and it's been great.
