    2017 Tennis Thread

Some chinks in the big four armor. Djokovic dealing with chronic elbow issues. Murray dealing with a bad hip. Fed took time off to heal up (clearly worked). Opportunities opening up for some others in future tournaments while some of the usual favorites heal up. US Open should be interesting.

    Go Fed.

    No Sluff. Go Querry.
And, I will now publicly declare that I was wrong about Fed being washed up last year. He's obviously on the juice.

Seriously though, the guy's looking fucking unstoppable.

Venus and Muguruza in a good finals match so far. 3-3 on serve in the first.

Venus failed to capitalize on a first set break point, seemingly lost her forehand and focus, and got crushed once Muguruza attacked.

Fed has broken Cilic on the court numerous times and most importantly mentally. Its over. 6-3, 3-0 Fed so far.

School me bmills. Wtf is goat? Too bad Cilic was hurt. Congrats to fed, no question he's one of the all-time greats. Definately in the top 5. Top 3, perhaps. Laver, borg, conners, fed, Mac. Not in order.

Yeah he's in the conversation. But I wouldn't give him the honour just yet. He's in some pretty damn good company. Borg dominated when he was at the top of his game and against some pretty stiff competition.

I don't know how you could argue he isn't the GOAT, other than "by my eye, so and so was better". Objectively, there really isn't a challenger.

    Agreed.

I've read on occasion that the other greats faced stiffer competition. But is that really the case?

I don't think so. I think Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Laver, were all exceptional in their day, but I don't believe that they faced any better competition than Djokovich, Nadal, and Murray.

you are forgetting sampras... he belongs in that list. he was certainly better than mcenroe and connors

murray is a great player not in league with feder and nadal. ddjokovic could be if he can rally from what ever has happened to his game

and I forgot about lendl, stefan edberg, agassi, and boris becker. there are a lot of great names from the past in tennis

And don't forget Pete, and Andre (yeah they were in their latter years but they were still awesome), and a whole laundry list of top 10 players that have been bested by Fed during his insanely long career.

    Like Roddick.

Djokovic, despite his current slump, has had a hell of a run.

Sampras belongs in the greatest ever list, but does anyone really argue that he was better then Federer? Seems like the only names people conjure up are the ones I mentioned, in part because it's easier to imagine them as better than Roger because they played in such a different era. I agree that Pete was better than Mac or Connors, BTW.

Djokovich most definitely is on the list, he has 12 majors (only Roger, Rafa, and Pete have more), he has the career GS (one of only 8), he has the chronological Grand Slam.

i don't think anyone is better than federer that I have watched. i started with borg. borg with today's equipment and training would be amazing.

so that leaves emerson and laver - such different eras

Hmm. After seeing Laver, Rosewall, Newcombe, McEnroe, Sampras, Borg, Connors and Nadal, among others, I'm having a hard time not granting the GOAT to Fed.
