    That's nothing.
If you know Portland OR this bit of carnage occurred on Sw Salmon between 18th and 16th. It was one of your periodic freezing rain events for which PDX is famous. I really don't think chains would have helped, except maybe if one end was attached to the frame and the other end was tied off to a light post or something Add in people trying to drive when they shouldn't fucking be walking and insurance adjusters are working overtime.

One of the cars--maybe the last one--stopped and then started up again. I don't understand what makes someone do that once it becomes clear the driving successfully is impossible. He also seemed to think that he would have better traction if he drove faster.

Bumping this because of the Mammoth thread. I’ve been driving Outbacks around with no chains or cables for years but it seems prudent to get a pair just in case I get stuck or have to show them at a checkpoint, as has apparently been happening on 395 this winter.

Any recs that will fit on an ‘05 Outback? How far can I go with them before damaging the car?

I don't have enough clearance for chains on my Outback and the owner's manual says not to use them. With decent winter tires traction has never been an issue, but that may not get you past CalTrans in a snow storm. The lack of snow driving skills in CA is amazing to me.

Get a set of these in the correct size:

As was said in that thread, CalTrans will close the road before they'll require them on an AWD vehicle.

Sweet, thanks LR. I’d never heard of chp actually making you show them anything until now so hadn’t worried about it.

Yeah, I'd heard about it, but never had it happen personally. I have a nice set of actual chains in my 4Runner, but I actually use them on occasion for gnarlier non-highway stuff. Never had to show them.

For your uses, I'd think those Autosocks are perfect. Probably more compact than cables too.

4 skinny studs and mash on the accelerator. You'll slice through and stick to anything.

    Stomping it!
