Broken screw embedded in ski . . .

Any options besides using an 8mm hollow core bit?

I was removing bindings off a pair of a friend's skis and one of the screws was spinning in place because it had been sheared off (tele bindings). Now, there's 1/2 a screw embedded in the ski. Planning to put inserts in them, so it's not the end of the world if I have to use the 8mm hollow bit . . . .

    Thanks.

You might be able to drill into the screw with a small bit and then pull it out. The bit would have to have enough bite into the screw though. Worth a shot.

If you can't get enough purchase with a smaller hole, progressively larger bits might grind away the screw enough until you can or it can be ground and/or broken out. Could be a PITA, though vs the hollow bit. How much is embedded, 7 to 9mm? Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

I broke a screw off in a tele ski and I just ground it flush and moved 1 cm cuz it's just a tele ski...how precise is That?

Probably it broke cuz it was epoxied in (I remembered mine was epoxied after it broke) hit that screw with heat if you are going to try getting the remains out

in fact since you don't always know how a screw was put in any ski hit any binding screw with heat at the very 1st sign they don't want come easy

    Thanks for the input.

I think the screw likely sheared after being rusted out from water infiltration. I tried Alpinord's drilling it out method before posting and was getting my bit to wander (causing a big fucking mess), so I quickly stopped. I will try the left spinning bit / easy-out extraction method. In the past, I've rarely had that work for me, so my guess is that the hollow bit is the way to go at this point. But, we'll see.

XXX-er, moving the mount probably would have been the smartest. But, since I'm an idiot, I already drilled the other three holes with my 1/4" bit to make them ready for BF inserts. I could still move the mount location, but at this point, with those three gaping holes made, I might as well try the hollow bit option. Fortunately, the person bought some beautiful new AK-make skis and her plan is to make these her rock skis.

As suggested before, when you use the extractor help it out with some heat--a solder iron or drill bit heated up on a flame.

DO NOT drill it out with a 8mm hollow bit if you plan to put an insert into the same hole. The pilot hole for inserts is smaller than 8mm. The hollow bit is for helicoils (or tap-in inserts) only.

If you were trying to impress some hotty with your tech skills you might be in trouble young man. Chances of any reciprocation in personal favors are fading with every attempt at resolution.

Alright, a 1/8" left spinning bit did the trick. It mostly did what Alpinord suggested -- it ground down the bit and eventually loosened the remaining nub of a screw tip that I could get it out.

Hottie? She might willingly share a pic of her nursing her bambino.

Lowes sells a small EZ out. I had to use one on a stainless hex head screw that had stripped. Worked great.

Glad you got it out. Was this with a hand drill or a drill press?

For future reference, I'm wondering if something like a Dremel diamond tipped grinding bit would be a quicker way to grind out sheared screws you can't extract with an EZ out??

Hand drill. My wife might shit in my helmet without telling me if I purchased a press that would get used mostly, if not entirely, on skis. Not so much the cost to the wallet but the cost to our diminishing basement real estate.

A set of small "engineer" pliers is worth every cent in these situations.
