My Buddies Found an Apocalypse Cache in a Cave

I've spend this summer as a carpenter up in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The area I'm working in use to be a horsethief hideaway some years ago. Lotsa the locals say this is where they would come to survive an apocalypse. Yesterday my buddies were hiking around the area, and found a cave up in the cliffs across the river. Inside sat three barrels filled with survival gear. Saws, Traps, a fishing kit, Horseshoes, ropes. They only went through some of the stuff, and the only thing found with a date was a can of Criso with an expiration date in '79.

The cave is somewhere up in these hills


Part of what was inside - 3 Musketeer Bars, a fishing kit, Horseshoes and nails, animal traps, rope, and chocolate chips. I was amazed how well preserved everything was inside of the barrel. No rust, no rot.

I thought the same thing, but Crisco that expired in 1979 probably helps lighten the mood. It'd be a whole lot more disconcerting to find a bunch of modern MREs and .223 rounds.

I wonder if this might have been a cache left by prospectors or something like that?

I have to agree with Stuck here. That's pretty weak as far as apocalypse caches go.

A film crew did a piece on us and our find and we're we're also able to save the town but that's another story.

It was found in a Wilderness Area; that glue hasn't worked since '84.

Highly interesting, something that would be cool to peruse in a solving-a-mystery sort of way.

The bicycle repair kit looks like it's from the 1960s. You might be able to get a better time line from that alone.

It's curious a bicycle inner tube repair kit, but no bike. Either someone else snagged the bike if one was there, or the prepper was going to ride his/her bike there. Mountain bikes didn't exist in the 60s or 70s.

We rode our bikes in the mountains all the time before you needed a special bike to ride trails.

We did too. Learned real quick off-road busted things up, flat tires, bent rims, broken frames. On even the then-tank-like schwinn and similar bikes. Local landscape and geology makes a difference I suppose.
