I got bitten by some sort of pitty on Ahab last week. That shit was annoying.
Riding Weds pm, solo, trying to beat some weather. About 3/4 of the way down Lower Ahab, there is one last little punchy sandy climb out of a wash before those roller moves towards the finish.
As I come into the bottom of the wash, about 25ft in front of me I see a dude with a tiny little white fancy dog totally lose his shit like I appeared out of thin air. I can’t fathom how they couldn’t have heard me slapping rocks across the other side of the wash, but apparently I surprised the shit out of them. I stopped immediately, still about 20ft from guy, then I look up and see his petit girlfriend with a large square headed doggo, that actually seemed pretty chill. Wasn’t growling or anything, just looked kinda wiggly and excited like a terrier, albeit a very large one.
There’s no way I’ll be able to pedal up the climb from this spot, so I get off and start walking, assuring the dude that it’s all good, no worries.
I wait for the girl to walk down the steep bit, but she chooses to pull the dog above the trail and climb up a foot or two.
As I walk past her, the dog suddenly pulls the leash through of her hand and manages to just get a good nip from below on the inside of my bicep before I jump and she pulled it back. Thankfully it didn’t break the skin, but left a pretty good mouth-shaped bruise that started getting color immediately.
They received a proper shaming regarding what a terrible choice it is walk dogs up that particular trail, especially large ones that are keen to take a lunge at a human/cyclist.
I can’t remember for sure, but think there’s even a sign at the bottom that suggests it’s a heavily used downhill bike route.

I've had two of three kids bitten over the years in Park City. I'm a dog lover, but entitled owners who don't train their pets are the worst. One guy denied it happened and I had to call the sheriff to find out if the dog had shots. Broke the skin on her butt. I almost went to jail that day. I still get really angry just typing this.

    "They've never done that before."

    Which is such unadulterated bullshit.

Hiking pole poke to aggressive dogs seems to work well.

FIFY. Some dogs just cannot be trained to not be territorial/anxious/reactive. You can do some sensitizing to bikes and stuff, but at the end of the day, it’s not necessarily a training issue but an owner failing to acknowledge how their dog will react to others on the trail, and doing a shit job of managing that.

Idunno man, consider this, if a dog is aggressive and off leash on a popular trail, then it’s a good chance their human is also a shithead and will escalate the situation even more if you fuck with a dog that hasn’t moved to bite you.

Personally I’d just try to put the bike between me and the dog (in the context of this thread) and back away while yelling for it to go home, wait for the shithead to get it under control, pass, and only then give them shit for having that animal off leash. At that point you can at least GTFO if they are supreme assholes.

Yelling at them really just aggravates and excites them more, IME. (Both dogs and owners)

    Zackly.
I had a pit bull that became more and more protective of us and, as a result, became more aggressive to others. It was on ME to make sure he was never in a position to hurt someone.
Yes, that meant no off leash and not even walks where others might be around.

It's very important to report these instances to police because once an issue is reported, the owner can't get off by saying he didn't know.
He'll either act accordingly or be liable for a nice lawsuit.

Hiking pole poke works on aggressive humans too.

Yeah... I have a great trail dog other than the fact we have no clue how he reacts when he sees dogs bigger than him and humans. Sometimes he's chill and super stoked, other times he barks his face off..... Now he stays home 100% of the time.

we had a paddling play area where people would let their dogs off and they chase the cattle,

the dog owner would let the dog out and it would chase cattle

owner would say " he's never done that before, lets go surfing "

since we were there by the grace of the farmer a " no dogs " rule was instituted

which also meant no dogs fighting & no dogs stealing food

Around here a dog that chases cattle gets shot and that is legal.

Good on ya for being proactive.

Minor rant about Nukeproof/Vitus closing up US ops, essentially overnight lots of good folks here in SLC are out of work because their primary investor decided to pull funding. Sucks, but business.

Have been a big fan of some of the Nukeproof gear I've bought from CRC, especially their pocket bibs. Picked up another pair and trail trousers, hopefully they ship!

If you all weren’t carrying bacon strips, the dogs might leave you alone.

That was quick. Didn't they just open up a US presence this year?

A friend of mine just finished a contractor job for them - no payment now. Fuck that investor and the company - that's not " justbusiness". That's crooked shit IMO. They've been losing money for years (from what I read), they could have managed the contractors and employees better. two weeks paid notice and not hiring people contractors to do anything as you prepare for bankruptcy would be easy.

Looks like they were expecting some funding that isn't gonna come. Sucks for your friend, either way.

I just saw somewhere that the US operation was preforming well and exceeding goals. We had their rep in the shop last week and I was getting ready to pull the trigger for next year.
It’s crazy that a decade of shipping things around the world at free/low rates and sourced from grey markets at shifty, desperate margins didn’t work out for CRC and Wiggle.
Bummed for the good people that jobs, but can’t say I give a fuck about CRC/Wiggle. They got what was coming to them.
